Backfire

Fuck! I took Pegasus for a walk this morning -- the car backfired and had to be towed all the way to Warner's bay for repairs.

I like to take Peggy for a walk along the bush tracks between the other side of the freeway here and the Mountain Range. He loves it, though he's not so keen about the return car trip. Anyway, the walk was OK, but the car backfired when I started it and then stopped. I opened the bonnet and there was fire in the air flow meter!

The bloody thing'd been blown apart again. I put out the fire and then let out a scream. I had the Rauni fixed a few months ago for the same problem. On that occasion they put a new distributor cap in and it cost $237. I can't afford too many repairs like that. The first thing I tried doing was pushing the car around so that I could coast it closer to town. This really exhausted me, but I got it 500 metres closer to West Wallsend. Great -- that was going to save me $$$.

Finally I decided to lock it, and then walk home with Pegasus. It was only 5 km away, so it was just another part of a morning's walk for him. We hot home about 11am. I found that the phone wasn't working -- no dial tone! Great. Rather than panic right away I made some breakfast and then considered what to do.

In the final event I got my mountain bike out and rode down the street to a phone booth. I called the NRMA and arranged for a tow to Warner's Bay. I then rode back to the car, buying some dog bones from a butcher (and putting them in my backpack) on the way. I only just got there and the tow truck arrived.

These things used to have a crane and actually towed your car -- nowadays they all seem to be trucks with trays that bend and which your car sits while it's driven to wherever. As it was, it was one of the drivers from last time, so he recognised me. I packed the bike in the back of the car and off we went. After a stop at an ATM for money (to pay for the tow) it was delivered to the garage.

I left it there and rode home, with a stop at Spear's Point library on the way home. That may have been a mistake. I rode back to Barnsley via Telarah and got caught in the rain. I was carrying some dog bones and books in the backpack and felt totally stuffed when I reached home. I dried myself off and went to bed.
