Media PC

Have been talking to Kevin about putting together a media pc for me. Looks like I get one made for just under $600. It would:

  • receive record digital TV (especially with FreeView coming in next year);
  • play DVD/CD/MP3 media;
  • be connectible to the local network (and thereby the net), which means
    • I could record stuff on it and watch/copy/play it on my study pc, or vice versa
    • watch youtube and other Internet TV (like iview), and/or play streamed media (like DIG or Shoutcast)
    • move my existing DVD player and VCR into my bedroom to connect with the TV there; and
  • burn stuff I've recorded for later access.

Been thinking about this idea for a while, since the cheap set top box I was using died. TiVo and DVD recorders had their attractions, but this seems like the most flexible arrangement I could have. I might watch a lot of TV (I'd be lying if I said I didn't) but I'm selective about what I do watch. This would give me many more options as well.

A Tale of Three Todds

Lots of other stuff happened today, but I also scratched an itch. I now own DVD copies of Sweeney Todd the 2007 film ($12.99), the 2001 concert ($9.99), and the 1982 stage show ($9.99). It took chasing down the the copies that were on sale, but now I'm fully Todded supplied.

DVD Disappointment

My Tevion DVD player has been playing up for a while. It doesn't seem to play DivX or MP3s properly (it tries) and often stutters or freezes. I'd been thinking of buying a replacement, but holding off because the idea of building a PC media centre is more appealing (but I don't have the $$$ yet).  Part of the motivation is that I've recently received some burnt DVDs with MP3 and DivX files on them. I could just use my PC to play and watch them (especially after getting the new speakers) but I don't really want to wear out the burner.

Anyway, David gave me a free DSE DVD player. Just plugged it in and tried it - it really plays the commercial DVDs quite well (better than the Tevion) but just won't read anything burnt, and lacks a zoom out feature. Oh, well, time to save up for a media centre.

Nostalgia Knock-out Drool!

8th Man DVD menuI can't help it. I just discovered 8th Man Animé Archive!

This is an online store selling old animé series, like 8th Man, Marine Boy, and Prince Planet. Used to watch these in the 60s. Fold memories. It's so so tempting to get at least volume one of these, or even Princess Knight or Amazing Three (these last two are Tezuka creations).

Argh - temptation!

DVD Glut

Happened to go to Big-W today. They had a range of favourite films there for $13 or less. Just as well I didn't have the money, or I would have walked out with $50 worth or more. They had: The Party (Peter Sellers); Kiss Me Kate; The Music Man; Showboat; Outland (which for $6, I did buy - imagine "high Noon" in space); and Harold & Maude.

I'll be back on Wednesday to get a copy of Harold and Maude. I saw this on sale two years ago in Go-Lo and failed to get one. Not this time - a favourite film!

True to Form

Originally I was going to do all sorts of stuff at uni today, and also go to Newtown to attend a dinner for next year's QC. I liked that idea, and sent an e-mail to Roderick this morning suggesting that he join me tonight.

But the day didn't work out that way. I decided not to go to Newtown, and never got to the uni (tomorrow for sure). I even phoned Roderick to cancel, even though he hadn'tt got my e-mail yet.

I spent most of the day at Jenny's, watching videos (including the "Laputa" film from last night). I am just too stressed to go travelling much again today. I did go to BIG-W and buy a copy of Bambi for her. While I was there, I bought dicounted DVDs of The Hunger (hey - David Bowie's in it), Little Shop of Horrors (the musical version, I already have a copy of the original), and Excalibre (Boorman film about King Arthur).

Too much stress. I mentioned to her how for the last 2-3 months I've felt like I had an "iron band" around my chest, and she said that it was stress. Sheesh - well what else is new?

Getting rid of the stress is another matter. You'd think the uni break would help, but so far it's been the reverse. I need to look after myself better, and that means "time out". And the QC meeting? Well I'll catch the next one.
