Mar. 12th, 2007 07:46 amWell, I'm typing this from Karl's place in Stanmore. I stayed here last night after going to the Tezuka exhibition at the State Art gallery.
It was a good exhibition, well worth the $10. I recognized a number of works, and discovered others that I hadn't known about like Human Metamorphosis (see image right). This might sound silly, but I cried with joy at the exhibition.
There was a tour group at 1pm. I'd already seen everything there, and already knew something about Tezuka, and it was interesting and annoying to listen to the tour guide "explain" his work, and pass on assumptions (like that all Japanese are born with the ability to read and understand manga).
I saw the film My Neighbour Totoro afterwards. Never seen this Studio Ghibli film before - absolutely enchanting! You know, I wouldn't have that many problems living at Barnsley without a car, if I had access to the Cat Bus! I am so glad I got to see this in a cinema. It was in Japanese and subtitles, but after the first 30 seconds you just don't notice. I love the idyllic (and Shinto based?) depiction of rural life shown in this film.
After the film I walked to Circular Quay and caught the Manley Ferry to Manley and back again. I wasn't feeling all that well. I was headachey, and had dried eyes, and kept falling asleep. Maybe I shouldn't have had a glass of port the previous night. Not a good state, though the trip was pleasant enough. I met Johanna while waiting at Redfern Station, whom I knew from Newcastle Uni. She looked like she was prospering here.
Got to Karl's about 7:30pm. We watched some episodes of season 2 of Battlestar Galactica and had an early night (Karl had to work today). This morning I felt refreshed. Now it's back on the train to Newcastle. I plan to go to a Queer Collective meeting at uni today, and then back home to see how Kevin and the pets are.
