Heat and Rest
Feb. 11th, 2010 04:29 pmWent to the Maitland Regional Gallery yesterday, mostly to see :labelled queer. Despite two of the artists showing being my supervisor / ex supervisor, I didn't see that much that was queer on display (giant size drawings of tops and bottoms notwithstanding); rather it seemed more just gay & lesbian to me. I did really like Salvatore Zofrea's Days of Summer however.
This occupied most of the upper level. Zofrea works with woodcuts on Japanese paper and his degree of details shows an obsession with observation. I especially enjoyed a large oil painting at one end, that seemed very three dimensional - something missing in the prints.
Otherwise the excursion out to Maitland was hot and bothered. I hit the op shops (and also Sam's Warehouse) before going home, picking up a miscellany of books, CDs and kitchenware. Maitland seems to be the Hunter Valley's capital of cheap stuff (though I swear I saw a book in one bookshop that was there last time I'd dropped in, 2 years ago). I also discovered Foodworks though the only things I got there were can covers and a packet of musk drops.
Hot and exhausted when I got home, but art requires sacrifice.
