PC CRecovery Progress
Jun. 17th, 2010 09:55 amI recovered 100% of my data files, thanks to using an old copy of GetBackData (yay!). I have backup my settings, and even backed up lots of programs by directly copying their folder.s So, I have more or less recovered everything I need.
However, I still have minor malware problems (my other PC seems infected now, and I'm scanning that with Anti-Malware), and trying to boot from the windows install produces a "Disk Read Error, press CTRL+ALT+DEL" message. Did a lot of searching on the net and found three explanations that are most likely correct:
So the next thing for me is to test these. I installed an extra SATA drive last week and it worked fine and windows booted OK, until I tried to install Linux again. So maybe it's a problem with a dual boot (even though I've reset the MBR who knows how many times), or somehow I've reset it with an earlier version of windows, or somehow the "master" drive has become a "slave"!
The next thing for me seems logical. Test it by removing the other drive (which is where I now have all my backups). Stay tuned.

- Solution for "A disk read error occurred",
- Windows no longer starts after you install an earlier version of the Windows operating system in a dual-boot configuration, and
- Getting rid of "A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart" error
