Speaking of the PC connection problem, I'm fairly certain it's the firewall I have on the PC (PC Tools Free). While I was typing the other post I was checking this out.

Before I booted the PC I swapped the LAN plugs in the back of the switcher between study PC and the spare - no change;
I've been playing around with turning the firewall on and off. I tested that with playing both my net radio (Radio Sure) and playing The Beauty of Gemina clips in Youtube. With the firewall ON, both get paused somewhere between 50-100 seconds after they start.
- If I turn the firewall off at that point Youtube starts again, and if I have the firewall off it plays all the way through
- When the firewall's on, RadioSure says it's buffering and resumes a bit later, after about 10-30 seconds. With the firewall off it never pauses to buffer unless you change channels.
- On facebook posting an update with the firewall OFF happens pretty much immediately. Posting an update with the Firewall on, takes anywhere between 10 - 120 seconds!
- Certain large downloads (like last night, when I tried to download the Lightworks Video Editor beta which weighed in at 40mb) get paused and hung in the middle of the download!

So, pretty obviously there's something going on with the firewall and all of these, which is where I've noticed the problem. The odd thing is that I'm using the same Firewall for the lounge PC, which does not have these problems. I think my next step is to look at the firewall on that PC, and see what settings are different on it.

And after I do that, I can see why I haven't been getting updates from Live Journal mailed to me!.
