If you find visiting a care unit exhausting, imagine what it was like working in one as I did for a couple of years!

I imagine that to be something that you have to have a strategy to cope with.

Well my teaching career had been with seriously disabled, abused and terminally ill kids so the strategies were already pretty much in place!

It reminds me of an article I saw in a book on funny headlines. One of the local candidates for election said that he'd spent years working with the retarded and disabled and felt perfectly qualified to understand the needs of the locals.
