GP's suggestion

On Monday my GP suggested that I DON'T have a blown head gasket on my car.
His reasoning was that I wasn't losing any water, which I should if it was a head gasket at fault. He suggested that it was a slightly less costly oil seal.
Can anyone with car sense suggest whetehr this might be true or not?
