The car I owned with Lee (a Datsun Sunny station wagon) was called The Sunny. The van I owned with Carol (a 1300 Mazda van) was called The Vardo (Rom for 'Van') and the car I owned for 10 years (a Nissan Pintara station wagon) was fully called The Kushti Rauni (Rom for 'Good Lady") or more commonly just The Rauni.

If and when I get my postie bike, I'm not sure what I might call it.

They came...

Last look at the car - from the rear Gone! (back)
Last look at the car - from the front Gone! (front)

...and took it away!

Turns out they were friends of the people at the end of the street and saw it on the way home. It obviously pays to take a chance, and I am so so so so so so relieved that it's gone (might mow the front lawn later today)!

Um, this is weird. Someone came along and just bought my car for $50.

I had some idea of selling it via eBay for $500, or maybe putting it in the classifieds, but all of that was complicated, would require an initial investment and be uncertain of success. Now maybe they're going to sell it for $500 (or whatever) to someone else but...

...I don't care. I just want it gone. And it will be soon (as soon as he comes back with a car float).

I brought the Rauni home yesterday.

I gave up trying to get a permit to surreptitiously drive her home. I phoned around, and found a company that would tow her for a flat $60 (15 km, or $4/km). I might have got it cheaper, but that seemed reasonable.

The first thing I did was check the car. She seemed alright, and fairly clean after two days of heavy rain. I also found a missing battery for my mobile on the floor of the driver's side, so I was able to phone the company directly. Rather than have the car towed straight away (it was 1pm) I arranged for her to be towed a 4pm. Then I went to Stocklands in Jesmond, and later Wallsend Plaza, and did some pet food and other shopping, stowing the stuff in the car. It all got towed home together.

I also had lunch at Henny Penny, which was the least I could do considering that my car'd been parked in their car park for the last 8 days. I also introduced myself as the owner of the car and said that it would be removed at 4pm. They seemed relieved that I'd finally made an appearance. They also seemed puzzled, saying that the policeman who'd removed the plates had said that it hadn't been reported stolen. I was too embarrassed to tell the truth, so I lied. I told them that I'd been fixing it up for sale, and that my nephew had taken it for a joy ride. They accepted that entirely.

But I can't lie to myself. I fucked up due to my own actions, and have to accept responsibility for that. On the way home, sitting in the drivers cab of the truck, I felt initially relieved to get the Rauni moved, but as we crossed the bridge in Barnsley I felt very very sad.

laura_seabrook: (Default)

It finally happened - I drove my unregistered car out on the streets, and got pulled over by the police.

Bottom line is, I took a risk and got caught out, and now (they're sending out infringement notices) I will pay the price (probably literally).

The Details )

Well, I knew that if I kept using the car one of three things would happen (accident / breakdown / police), and it did. I guess the temptation to use it "just one more time" was too much. Either way, now I bear the consequences of my actions, and though I'm not very happy about it (and nobody better dare saying "I told you so") I have to accept that. No one forced me to drive the car - I did so because it was an easy option to do so, rather than let it go and/or save up for repairs.

The least I'll get will be a fine - I guess there goes this years "advance" from Centrelink (last year's went on paying panel beating costs on an accident I don't remember). However, now I have an additional problem, of having the car stuck in Wallsend at in the Henny Penny car park. Don't know what to do about that. Kevin suggested that I just call a wreckers and give her to them. Not keen on that, and as I don't know of anyone who'd tow the car for me (and am uncertain about paying someone to tow it) I don't know what to do.

Suggestions anyone?

Oh, what a long long day.

The Day )

Plans

Now here's the thing. After temporary losing my keys at Second Life last year, I made copies of both car and house keys. My car's still at Glendale and I could (tomorrow, too late for a bus) go and get it. But I'm also going down to Sydney tomorrow, before going to Wake the Dead tomorrow night. I have been looking forward to that, and that's one reason I got my hair done.

Luckily, [livejournal.com profile] fiery_ichor is driving down to Sydney and I was going with her anyway. She'll be here at 1pm, and I'm very tempted to just let the car sit there until Sunday afternoon/Monday morning. I need a break, and the car can wait until then.

Last week

After Friday I stayed home as much as I could. I stayed off the net, other than checking for some emails I was expecting. Didn't go out until Wednesday. Not been feeling happy, not been feeling particularly sane.

Wednesday

I had to go to uni this day, so I planned to do other things on the way. Only one problem, my car wouldn't start. I phoned the NMRA and the repair guy came out and got it going again (I think mostly, the battery was flat). But he also noticed all the smoke due to the cracked head, pointed out the obvious (too much smoke + too little power when only 3 cylinders going) and also said that if I wasn't careful, I'd be pulled over by the RTA and have a defect notice placed on the car, and also be fined $200!

Just what I was worried about, and it seems that lack of water leaking is no indication one way or another. He advised me not to drive it on the road. But I had no option, and ten minutes later I drove past his parked car, while he was filling out forms. Hmmm.

I got away, and did all the tasks except get to the uni Honours Seminars (which was why I was going there in the first place). Oh well. But, I got: dog bones for Pegasus; my license renewed; bought pet food; paid some bills; and did a "library run". I also finally got through to a local health service to get an appointment with a dietician; and got through to my endocrinologist's secretary. I needed a referral so I got an appointment with my GP on Friday.

Didn't get home until 10pm, as I was in the Huxley Library doing web searches.

Thursday

Drove to Teralba and caught the train into town. I had one appointment for tarot readings - the first in six weeks. Liz suggested that I drop back to fortnightly. I've agreed for now, but lack the resources right now to advertise.

But I also had a big sinus headache for most of the day. I felt "shaky" and ready to drop. In fact I'm glad I only had one reading. Kept taking generic aspirin for it, and went to bed early. Not before playing with DOGA - a 3D graphics program. I made models of the spaceships in "Future Imperfect". Very pleased with that.

On Monday my GP suggested that I DON'T have a blown head gasket on my car.

His reasoning was that I wasn't losing any water, which I should if it was a head gasket at fault. He suggested that it was a slightly less costly oil seal.

Can anyone with car sense suggest whetehr this might be true or not?

I'm supposed to go to a "TAFE Alumni" luncheon today (and maybe a Hunter Apana committee meeting afterwards) but I'm not at all up to either. Still feeling down with this flu.

I've emailed Sharon about getting a lift to the luncheon (she only lives a suburb away) but don't know if she's going, or will get the e-mail in time. Not really happy about driving my car on the roads today (didn't go out at all, yesterday) - we're both a bit sick!

Dog Walk

Mar. 12th, 2006 09:03 am
laura_seabrook: (Default)
Took Peggy for a walk in the old Gretley Colliery near Glendale TAFE this morning. Lots of changes there. TAFE are expanding their campus, and there were heaps of moving and construction gear sitting around. Further around at the College they've also cleared a huge strip of bush from near the school. There's new BMX tracks there now, to follow.

Pegasus really seemed to enjoy the walk, though he was stuffed by the end of it (plenty of steep hills), and I was really sweaty. I know that if the trip comes off (still no certainty, but if so, I leave Wednesday!) I know he'll be looked after one way or another. If I can't get them kept in my friend's backyard, I'll get an advance from Centrelink on my disability payments, and put him in a kennel while I'm gone.

I was going to stop at a chemist to get some hormones on the way home, but none was open and my car was blowing too much smoke (I put some oil in the engine this morning) so I gave it a miss. Must go shopping tonight. I've been putting off food shopping because, well why buy food if I'm not here to eat it?

Flat Tire

Mar. 7th, 2006 07:56 pm

Went to Jenny's today and watched a lot of video while I tried to install and extra hard drive on her PC. Didn't achieve that worse luck. Anyway coming home I got a flat tyre just around the corner.

I pulled the jack, gear and spare out of the back of the car, but I couldn't budge the car. I was about to walk back to Jenn's to phone the NRMA when a good Samaritan pulled over in his four-wheel drive and helped me out. Not only did he change the tyre, but showed me tips for when I might need to do it again.

That was a relief, though I don't now have a spare tyre, so I'm going to have to be careful. One thing - the good Sammy (I never caught his name) said that "bad things come in threes" - even if that's the case, after engine trouble and accidents, this makes # 3. Whew! = WINK=

Just got a phone call from "Val" from the car insurers about the damages on the car accident.

Before anything happened I told her to wait until I got something to write on. The last time I had a phone call it took me by surprise and after it happened I wasn't sure of the details. I found paper and pen, and when I got back on all the other person could say was "Could I speak to Ms Seabrook, please" assuming that I wasn't Ms Seabrook. I hate this, when I get a call from someone who's never met me and they assume that I'm not me. I rather tersely explained the situation and how annoyed such assumptions made me. She apologised and got down to business.

It seems the damage will cost $409.24 to be repaired and I either have to pay up front, or put in a claim for "excess" which is $450! I'm really lost here. Apparently I can pay it off somehow (I have to phone back and let them know what I decide) but I still don't really know the details of the accident! What if someone just put down my number instead of their own? bah - that will get me nowhere, but I'm also paying of $50 a month on my student loan which paid for the Rego costs on the car which can currently barely work.

Argh! = SHOCKED=

Not sure what to do on this. I pulled three cards from my "Mermaids and Dolphins" deck. They said:
Make a Wish
You're being Helped
Tranquillity
Hmmm. I guess I shouldn't panic. Maybe this is the "least of the evils". Suggestions, anyone?
laura_seabrook: (Default)
I just had a phone call from someone in the NMRA wanting to know if I was putting in a claim over the "accident" the other week, in response to a claim by the other party. They mentioned the other person's name once, but wouldn't give me any other details, only to say that their car was at an NMRA garage for claims assessment.

How can I claim when I don't know the details? They said they'd phone back Monday afternoon and take it from there. Great - just what I need. Now I have to be here Monday afternoon.

This is weirding me out.

I caught the train from Teralba into Wickham (and later the reverse) to get to Second Life. Apart from the fact that it was raining heavily and I was worried about getting across the Barnsley Weir (an 80 year old gentleman got killed doing just that a couple of years ago) and also that I was late getting away, I got there on time (just).

It was a good ride - didn't have to worry about the car, or traffic, and I could read while I travelled (25 minutes each way). I think I'll be doing this again.

Oh, found out why the car wasn't blowing as much smoke - it was dry of oil. Filled it up as much as I could.
laura_seabrook: (Default)
The Rauni didn't blow that much smoke this morning, so I drove her to the uni and back today with a detour to a supermarket. Still underpowered, and she stalled when I turned out of a side street, so she's not quite back in shape yet.

Which means driving to Teralba tomorrow and catching the train into town.
laura_seabrook: (Default)
The Rauni's performance on the way back from Fassifern Station was pretty disappointing, but it matched up with problems I had before, when she wasn't firing properly on all cylinders (gee, maybe that's a description of me, too = WINK= ).

Anyway, I worked out a workaround strategy for getting about, though it's a little extreme or silly. She runs OK on the flats, but dies on hills that are too steep or hills with corners. Urk! Anyway, I could just drive to Teralba, and catch a train from there. Teralba's about 6-8 km from home, Cardiff (where I'd drive to go to TAFE) was 6 km.

Bottom line is though, something needs to be done, but at least I have some slack, and I don't have to catch the local buses.
laura_seabrook: (Default)
Well, I took my car to the mechanic's and he had a look at it. I felt like a "stupid woman" taking it in for a third time, but I needed to be sure.

Before I went up to Taree, she blew some smoke and had some serious long term problems (like shot piston rings), but she was drivable and not too smoky. I went up to Taree and Lorne to visit Kali. She seemed to be OK then, but I can back at night so if there was excess smoke I mightn't have noticed. I went in Newcastle to do Tarot readings and she seemed fine on the trip in. On the trip home however, the car seemed to lose power and blowing more smoke. I suspected that one of the cylinders was gone and I was right. I took it into the mechanic's on the following Friday and it turned out to be a bad spark plug lead.

OK, that was fixed and she was running "OK" again - that is, as well as she had been on the tip to Taree. Come Sunday however and in the middle of driving to/from the Computer Markets, the car lost power again and started smoking a lot (again). I took it in on the Monday and the mechanic put a new exhaust gasket on. This didn't seem to make a great deal of difference though, and the car still seemed under-powered. That's why I took her back today - she felt like she had another cylinder not firing. I may not know engines, but I know hat my car sounds and smells like, and what she's like when she's running OK.

And that isn't what the Rauni's like now.

I suspected that another lead had gone out. As it happened, the mechanic checked. None of the cylinders were shot, but two bolts were missing from the exhaust manifold, which he replaced. There's a "slight" improvement, but not much in power. I'm now faced with the fact that whatever is wrong, can't be fixed cheaply (the mechanic did the brief work for nothing). I can't reduce the smoke easily, and she's under-powered which makes her really hard (and maybe dangerous) to drive.

So, what are my options? I'll keep my use of the car down to a minimum - university / trips to/from the railway station (that way I can get to Sydney and back), and maybe food shopping (at night). I'll try and keep her running for as long as I can. Otherwise it's back to bus travel where practical. And why isn't it practical? Because the private bus company that services here is more expensive than the public transport, which doest; it doesn't run on holidays; and the last bus from uni (or anywhere) is at 7pm. Bleaugh.

Not happy, not happy.

Some plans

Feb. 14th, 2006 11:18 pm
laura_seabrook: (Default)
I was in a bit of panic still until late today.

Had to go to the university, though I didn't get there until late. I checked out the stall I was supposed to help at but there was no one else there and I didn't know what I was supposed to do, so I left again. Went to jenny's and watched some House (she had season 1 on DVD) and calmed down a bit.

I was still very worried about the car. She's still blowing a lot of smoke and lost power, which makes her hard to drive safely. The amount of smoke varied a lot. When I was on the link road cruising at 80 km, there was almost none that I could see. It may have been though, that my speed was such that it somehow matched the local wind, so it just blew away where I couldn't see it.

On the way home I was intending to buy some Spitfire, a smoke retardant to put in the engine. As I parked though, I could see wisps of smoke coming out of the bonnet. opened it, and there was smoke coming out of the side as before (not as much though), and it smelt and sounded like something was burning. I think (or hope) that there's one more simple thing that needs to be fixed - not the head gasket, because, well that'd be under the head, wouldn't it? Something else that was over looked.

I intend to drive to the local library which has a manual for this model and see what I can see, then I'll go back to the mechanic's and what the story is. At worst it'll be no better, but at best maybe it'll get fixed.

Later today as well, I should finally reinstall WIN98SE on this PC and install the new hard drive. Yesterday I was trying to back up my data by burning DVDs, but there must be something drastically wrong with the drivers - all I did was ruin three DVDs. Instead, I've done a workaround - I've copied all the data on the D drive into a spare partition on the other hard drive. Once I do a clean reinstall of windows (minus sound card) I'll replace the D drive, format it, and copy the data back. With over five times the space on the new drive, that might even be fun.

In any case, I have "some plans", and once I have those, even if they don't happen the way I expect them too, I just stop panicking. You probably won't hear from me for a day or so, if all goes well.
laura_seabrook: (Default)
I just had a visit from the police. It seems I had a car accident last Thursday, and I didn't even know about it!

That was the day that I didn't go into Second Life. did however run an errand for Jenny at Jesmond Stocklands, go to the uni, and almost have an accident later on when the car stalled just after a stop sign.

However, this one was in the Jesmond car park. It seems that I clipped the bumper of a parked car next to me, with the front right side of my car. The policeman pointed out the grey paint and scrapes on my car, and sure enough, they were there. Apparently someone left my rego number on the windscreen of the car I clipped.

The policeman took my date of birth and my telephone number, and said he would pass it on to the other party. He said that they might just put it down as a self reported accident. In any case I have comprehensive insurance (which comes due later this month, I might pay today instead), so if it needs to be fixed, I should be OK.

I - I'm really shaken by this. How can I have a car accident and not know about it? It didn't help that there were three police here, and a paddy wagon waiting, and all I was wearing was my night gown (I was just about to have a shower). I was going to go to the uni and help out at the Queer Collective stall, but now, I just don't know.

I can fucking well feel a panic attack coming on and I don't know how to stop it.

Oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit - I HATE VALENTINES DAY!
