After a lot of mucking about with that PC I've found a work-around. Discovered an old 80 Gb IDE drive which I can plug directly into the motherboard and boot from, after I install Windows on it. Once I have and I do, I can then install extra software that will run certain cards which will let me attach a SATA drive as well. So, one SATA goes in as the slave, and the other(s) get farmed out to the existing PCs so I can read the contents.

I can set windows up so that PROGRAMS will be on the SATA drive (maybe) so this should work. If not, that's it, and I will mothball it until I can afford a new motherboard / cpu / memory.
