I went for my first exercise walk today, just before lunch. It followed the route below:

Barnsley-walk-2km-a

When I prepared for this Bobby assumed I was going to take him, for a walk because (I think) put a hat on and hung the spare mobile phone around my neck (I listen to the radio on it). I tossed him a titbit and escaped out side, shutting the door behind me. I would love to take Bobby with me, but I figured that I wouldn't be able to keep a steady pace if I did. I took the walking stick with me and started up Charlton St. And Jenny, who lives across the road stopped in her car and asked where I was going and would I like a lift. I got in and got her to drop me at a bus stop on the edge of Barnsley ("A" in the map above) and walked back from there. Bobs was happy to see me when I got back.

Google Maps says that this journey is 2.0 km long and should take me 25 minutes to walk. I did it in 21, so it was a mildly quick walk. Ideally I should be exercising for at least 30 minutes, and walking faster than a stroll. I might use Google Maps to plan future trips, since it will give me length travelled and the times for a casual walk. If I can beat that time I should be exercising, right?

Some things I need to do in future:

  • Wear shoes/boots, not thongs; and
  • wear decent pants, not my garden tracksuit pants which are a bit "holey".
Otherwise, going for a walk before lunch might be a good idea, as I had a bit of an appetite when I got home. So, what would folk suggest for reasonable distance and time to complete it, for exercise?
