When Westrek (Perth Trek club) was still going (330+ members at its peak), I was the original life member (followed by Wendy Potts and others more deserving than I).

Didn't do much with that at the time, but I always remember Westrek fondly. And Trek has always been a source of inspiration for me. For a while I had a figure of Jadzia Dax on my altar.

I heard about Jame's Doohan's death on TripleJ this morning. Apparently he passed on in his sleep. Been a trekker all my life, and so find it sad that another of the original cast is gone. Who's next, I wonder?

I just found out that Jim Aparo died.

You're probably thinking "Who?" - everyone who ever watched Trek knows James Doohan as "Scotty", but Jim Aparo (you ask)?

There's a brief overview of him at The Comiclopedia, and samples of his artwork at Silverdale. Check out this version of the Spectre by him.

Like the author says in this piece at Cosmic Comix & Toys, Jim's work on the Spectre was always impressive. I'd only ever get to see it second hand, in Gordon & Gotch reprints, and at the time I had no idea who the artist was, but... ...WOW!

Villains melting into liquid flesh, the Spectre fighting gigantic demons bigger than the earth, or affecting spectral WWI dogfights were all parr for the course. And I just found out that he worked on the Charlton version of The Phantom (some of which I have)!

Goodbye Mr Aparo - well done!
