Russell T. Davies departs the TARDIS
May. 22nd, 2008 05:49 pm Russell T. Davies is stepping out of the TARDIS for good.
The Doctor Who mastermind, responsible for relaunching the classic science-fiction serial in 2004, will step down as executive producer at the end of the new series' fourth season, which is currently airing in the UK.
Davies will be replaced by Stephen Moffat, who has penned several episodes of the new Doctor Who - including 2007's 'Blink', a critically acclaimed instalment notable because it hardly featured the Doctor (David Tennant) at all.
Davies said working with Moffat had been "a delight and an hour". "I can't wait to see where his extraordinary imagination takes the Doctor," he enthused in a statement.
Moffat revealed that his entire career has been a secret plan to get the Doctor Who top job: "I applied before but I got knocked back because the BBC wanted someone else. Also I was seven," he quipped.
Moffat will take over at the start of season five, which isn't due to premiere on the BBC until 2010.
In addition to helming Doctor Who, Davies also created Queer as Folk and the Doctor Who spin-offs Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. </td></tr></tbody></table>
