Decided what to watch of a morning now, after watching the full run of Babylon 5, it'll be Deadwood.
I bought season one of this back in September last year. At the time I was going to watch it over at Jenn's, but she was less than interested in it (I got as far as watching three episodes of it with her).
Anyway, started watching this again from episode one, and a more focussed viewing of it (Jenn's was full of interruptions) is rewarding. Characters are seldom just "good" or "bad", and have their own agendas. Non-main characters seem to die quite regularly and in a fashion that is anything but glamorous. Story lines continue from one episode to another, and things that happen in one episode have very real consequences later on. Looking at the production quality and style, I can see similarities with a later HBO series, like Carnivàle and Rome.
The other thing is, even though each season only seems to have a dozen episodes, each is about 50 minutes long, and there are several seasons to watch. Could be fun, and I can buy them one at a time (I bought Bab 5 all at once in case the other seasons go sold out).
One of my heroines has always been "Calamity Jane". Watching the first few episodes again, I really like Robin Weigert's portrayal of her - both crude and rough, but also very vulnerable. It'll be interesting to see what happens to the character. Though historically she didn't die until 1903, and the series is set in the mid 1870s (Wild Bill is sure to killed while playing a poker game later this season, as the real Bill Hickok did).
The real Calamity Jane, Martha Jane Canary-Burke, had a tough, but interesting life. She took her choices, and the consequences of those as well.
Can't beat that, can you?
