Last night I was watching the last half of a film I've seen before: In & Out. I find the more I see this film, the more I really dislike it. I guess what really irks me is how the main character Howard is forced into assuming someone else's idea of who he might be (and it's interesting that this isn't based on any sexual preference, but on how he dresses and his body language). Compounding that then, is the final scene where (to support Howard) the whole town comes out "gay" in the most insincere (except for one) manner.
The ending was a lot like To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar. Don't get me wrong, I sort of liked that film, but I felt that both films played so much on stereotypes. At least in To Wong Foo, the people defended in the final scenes are who the sheriff thinks they are, whereas in In & Out, Howard is actually (at best fit) a metrosexual, so the so-called defence actually just pigeon-holes him more in morbid stereotype. I guess, not being American, the obvious reference to the Mcarthy Trials is lost on me.
Also, I can't help thinking of an episode of South Park, where to help the local nurse (who had a dead foetus on the side of her face) feel at home, everyone in town wore a fake dead foetus on the side of their faces! Speaking of South Park. The most insane episode (featuring immigrants from the future) was on last night. Not only that, but uncle Vic died on Queer as Folk, as well. I love how they dump the main characters in the shit in that show, only to have them resolve things before the end.
