Hedwig and the Angry Inch

I've just been watching Hedwig and the Angry Inch on DVD -- an odd film, but one that reminds me of The Phantom of the Paradise. Both films are about failed romances, and have apparently bizarre characters trying to make sense of their lives. And most of the songs in Hedwig, sound a lot to me like they were written and sung by Paul Williams, which of course they were, in Phantom.

They're not, however. Most were written by Steven Trask, who I've never heard of, until now. The central character is "sort of" a drag queen (by default if not by design) but that hardly matters. I loved the title song, since it was based on old Greek Mythology/Philosophy. I found it a rather poignant film. I was all weepy by the end of it, and the ending, though enigmatic is perhaps fitting to the piece.

Funny thing, but films like this, seen in a "holiday season" like this, heighten my sense of loneliness.

Highlander: Endgame

Well, I saw 2 out 3 previous Highlander films, a handful of the TV series, and all of it's offshoot, Raven. This film has both Connor (film) and Duncan (TV) MacLeod. I was disappointed that it didn't have the character from Raven in it, but for all I know she was killed off in the TV series. It was nicely shot, in Romania (and everywhere else) apparently.

Well, I was curious, and as I'd just joined the video library where I found both this and the above film, I was able to rent them for $2.50 total. Otherwise, would I bother seeing it? Probably not. I liked the original Highlander film, but it just seems like every sequel in the series is really a re-make of the 1st film.

The idea of the Immortals in these films seems very much that of Vampire, but minus the blood drinking and allergy to sunlight. I would have liked to have seen maybe vampires make an appearance in these films, as maybe "variant" Immortals (but then again, shades of Underworld). Then again, I still haven't seen #2, so maybe they already have. I've never seen an explanation of how in the first film Connor is "the one" when later he isn't. B-I-I-I-I-I-g plot hole.

Pity. And what's more, the trailer on the DVD doesn't match the film I saw! It shows;several scenes that aren't in the DVD version. Maybe they were in the theatrical version.Cheaters, teasers! The director apparently was an assistant director on Trancers III -- a "B" film that I liked (yay Jack Deth!),
but a trashy one at that, and The Crow: City of Angels . That explains a lot... ...and (gasp) I've just discovered that there's ANOTHER Highlander Film in the works! Have they no shame?

highlander 5? no shame at all. ok I have seen the 4 movies and the 2 series, each viewing I hoped I might get back some of the glam from the first movie, hoping for the collection to redeem its self of the sequels, but alas they never have.

I am a highlander by ancestry and living location, but because of the bombs released I get flack over my nick, maybe I should change my nick before the new movie makes public attention

Maybe the problem with the movies is simply, that they only have one tune (and that was sung best in #1). I only saw a few episodes of the TV series, but they seemed reasonably well scripted. I liked the Raven spinoff, but it was short lived.

If you haven't seen Highlander 2, don't bother.

It basically turned the story into some hokey science fiction thingy with plot holes you could sail a star destroyer through. I haven't seen any of the later films, but i hear they essentially started with the premise "let's pretend #2 never happened".
