Jeb's Fate

You remember Jeb, the dog from across the road who used to get out all the time and come over and play with Pegasus? Well I haven't actually seen him since 20th February.

Earlier this week, when Peggy was bleeding, I found out why. Jenny from over the road told me that the boy who's dog Jeb was, got tired of him, and so the mother had Jeb "dumped". Of course I can't verify that such is true, but it does fit the facts, more or less. Late February there was a commotion two houses up - the front gate was open and it seemed that one or both of their blue heelers had got out and there was a fight in the street between them and another dog. Couldn't see just which dog, without being obvious, but it could have been Jeb. Maybe they dumped him just after that.

Thing is, they can't "just" have dumped him, because Jeb was micro-chipped - he would have been scanned and returned when found. So, they must have killed him as well - that's the sad conclusion I've come to. Poor bugger - he was a bit of a nuisance but he was also harmless, and he'd come over and play with Pegasus. Funny thing two, because just after that date, Hallie came into my household, almost like she was filling a vacuum.

Bye bye Jeb.

Just got back home, and discovered Jeb at my front gate. I didn't see him until I opened it and off he went playing with Peggy. I let him play for a bit (so he could wear himself out) and then grabbed and returned him. The last time he was out was the 4th, so 6 day - not bad (they're improving).

No phone call, but then I also got on with the cleaning up and hanging the washing up outside.

Jeb turned up again. I let him in and after he was exhausted playing with Peggy (and after I put another bit of concrete in front of the gap), and had some water, I grabbed him and put him back in his backyard. He hasn't returned, yet. That makes it about a day and a half from the last time.

Hmmm, some things didn't change while I was away. Didn't notice him Friday night, but Jeb turned up again last night, on my bed!

I'd mowed the lawn in the day and forgotten to put the bricks back at the gate. He must have crawled in and started playing with Pegasus, then come in with him. It was a shock. I grabbed him and put him back in his yard - there wasn't anyone home (of course). He was back out again in five minutes.

I went back over and found the gap where he got out, one of the ones I'd originally plugged last month. I was replacing the bricks there when I heard a voice from the street say "What're you doing there?" I told them that I was plugging up the gaps and the voice said "They'll do that". I told them like "Like Hell, they haven't so far". They seemed to be friends of the people living there and asked me my name - but I demanded their's first. Then I explained how Jeb was over at my place, and how he'd once kept me up until 3am. That seemed to humble them, and they left (since obviously, the people they'd come to visit weren't home).

No worries until this morning, when Jeb turns up at my gate with a grey dog in tow. This seemed like another pup, and they were fighting. I put him back in his yard and replaced the bricks. He was out again after five minutes. All before breakfast, and I haven't slept that well last night, and have a headache this morning.

Then I put a board over the gap with bricks behind it. That kept him for 40 minutes, and he was back again (this time after breakfast). This time I've let him in the yard, as it will quiet him down. I'm going to get dressed and try plugging the gap one more time, and leave a note for when they get back.

Gah - this just tires me out. Maybe what I should do is call the pound, but I couldn't do that in good faith. A good solid plug will save the problem for now.

That little dog was at it again. I was up until 3:45am last night (you never know what's on late night TV on a Monday morning) and by the time I woke after 8am, it was just too hot to take Peggy for a morning walk. Instead, I took him for an evening walk instead.

Anyway, Jeb was on the loose and started following us up the road. I don't mind that much, but I had visions of him being hit by a car, especially near the round-a-bout. Anyway, had to coax the bugger back towards his home. I mentioned it to his owners and one of the kids collected him.

I offered to take him for a walk as well, but they weren't keen on that.
