I'm glad I saw this film today. The people who made, have at least read the book.

The first time I came across Narnia was on an episode of The Young Ones, back in 1985, when I made the trip to Aussiecon II with Ralph and Sean. We were all tired and were staying at a motel in Adelaide, and when we turned on the TV, Vivian was asking the White Queen if she did kebabs! ;-)

Didn't read the book(s) until much later. I found this film has captured the spirit of the book quite well. Yes, it's obviously what we should expect after Lord of the Rings, but it doesn't look like LOTR, it has a period character to it. The Christian subtext is pretty obvious, especially with Aslan dying to save another character, and yet, even as a pagan, I can well appreciate it. It has Father Christmas (not bloody Santa Claus, dupe of Coca Cola) who seems like a "green man", and later we meet a "green woman" of the trees. Loved the animation.

I really needed to see this film and - fuck, Father Bob just made a Narnia reference on TV - felt much relaxed afterwards.

There'll be sequels of course, as Lewis wrote another half dozen books set in the place. I wonder, I hope they film the Elric books just as good. Those won't be "PG" if they are!
