Sophie the bush dog
Oct. 7th, 2015 08:11 amWell, one last madcap adventure with Sophie (the big puppy I'm dog-sitting) before she gets gets picked up.
I decided to take just Sophie on a much longer dog work this morning. Leaving Bobs and Theo at home, we walked all the way to the Kevin Evans Oval (just south of the creek). The plan was to walk back by a big detour down the track to the the old sewerage farm and back down by the fire breaks to home.
I used to take Pegasus that way before he developed a limp. It was mostly too long for Theo and Bobs I'd have to carry! Anyway, all went well until she pulled forward on the lead, pulled my left foot into a pothole and I fell on my bad knee. In the process I let go of the lead and she happily ran off down the dirt track!
I made an effort to try an follow her but by the time I managed to get to the next intersection of trails and tracks she was well out of sight. I walked up a nearby power line (which clapping and shouting her name) but still no sight Then I decided the best thing was to walk home, put proper shoes on and go out and look for her. She may have gone that way anyhow. No sign of her. I got home, quickly fed Bobs and Theo, put shoes and a backpack with water bottles on, and took a pigs ear, and doubled back the way I just came. A storm was just starting to blow in.
I got halfway up a track between some horse paddocks behind my place, and saw her sniffing at a makeshift fence. I called her name and after a bit of hesitation she came running. Instead of running around like a nut, she followed me home fairly eagerly. I have no idea where she went but she came home covered in dirt - must have been a lot of fun! My guess is that she found my scent and followed it back to where I found her. It was on a walking route I'd taken her several times with Theo.
Anyway, she's back now, though I might give her a shower before Lisa gets here to take her back. ;
