two things
Jun. 5th, 2013 10:09 amI walked the dogs down the bush tracks this morning. I REMEMBERED to take my walking stick, but FORGOT to put their collars on them!
We didn't encounter anyone or anything else, but whoops!
Had a filling done this afternoon.
This was at the new clinic, but by the same dentist that extracted my two teeth a few weeks ago. Different results. The filling went ok, but I was literally in a state of shock by the end of it. The only way I got through was to play the tune "uncertain smile" in a loop in my head. I sat in the chair for a little bit and then got my hat and backpack and went to leave.
I made it to the foyer, before all I could do was just sit down, staring into space.
One of the staff noticed me after a few minutes and then they took me back in to the dentist's room, laid me in the chair and lowered my head so that it was lower than my body. I also got a sugary drink. After about 10 minutes, I was more or less OK, and staggered off.
Got across the street and caught a bus within 30 seconds of getting to the stop. Almost fell over on the bus and more or less slept for most of the trip. Went to the library to pick up a book and did a little shopping. When I got home (after coincidently meeting Kevin and Hallie at the chips shop) I realised that I'd left my blue hat on the bus...
...been a long day.
Stayin' home tomorrow.
Decided to check up with the Dental Clinic about my appointment today.
First, they couldn't find anything (under my name). Then, when I pointed out that I had an appointment card for 2:50pm with someone else's name they checked again, and yes, I have an appointment at 3pm (I double checked on that). The last thing I did was check the time at their end - it matched.
I can say absolutely without a doubt that today has been a confusing day.
I'm starting to recover from the lurgi that I've been down with. Even so, I still have a bit of a toothache and needed it to be looked at. First trip was to the dental clinic at Wallsend (after a damper and cappuccino breakfast in the cafe round the corner), however they sent me to the clinic at the Royal Newcastle Hospital. Now that's a funny place - it's due to be shut down and redeveloped, but for now it looks like a deserted set from a movie or TV series.
Anyway, I got there after having lunch at Harry's Cafe de Wheels, at what I thought was 2:10pm. Only, reception was closed. I asked a doctor/official and he pointed to a sign that said "RECEPTION CLOSED BETWEEN 1PM AND 2PM" I pointed out that is was after 2pm, but he pointed to a clock in the hallway which showed 1:10pm! I figured that my clock was wrong. I went downstairs and finished reading a book and adjusted my clock (which had in fact been set to 2:20am, and with the date and year settings reset), and went back at 2:10pm.
This time reception was open, and after checking in I took a seat and waited. the Dr examined the area and said that it was my wisdom tooth and would have to be replaced. He gave me a referral card and also a referral for an X-Ray and told me that I'd have to get one done before having the tooth removed. Went to reception and initially they said that I couldn't get an appointment until the 23rd and at Wallsend! I said that that wasn't very good (17 days?) and they were able to get an appointment for me at the Hospital tomorrow, but that I'd have to get the X-Ray done.
OK - I went to the radiologist service (via the library) getting there just before 4pm. Checked in and waited, but when they'd called, it was for a different name! Huh? They'd put entirely different details on the referral slip -someone born in 1963 and living in Raymond Terrace. Once I realised the mistake I brought it to their attention - they phoned the RNH clinic and they faxed a proper referral to the service and I had the x-ray taken (see below):
I got out finally about 4:45pm, and went shopping at a nearby Coles to catch the 5:15pm Sugar Valley bus from Newcastle. Only it never came. Or rather, it did come at 5:15, only I was there at 6:15 - huh? Seems that the hospital's clock was just plain wrong. The strange thing is that everyone in the clinic was setting their time by it.
Finally I caught a bus to Wallsend, went to the library there and then waited for the (final) 7:10pm bus. I'd checked my travel clock when I got to the library but it was showing 12:40am at 1/1 in 1996! Guess I'll be getting a new travel clock soon (or at least change the battery).
A very confusing day. Can't say it inspires confidence in the staff at the RNH clinic, what with incorrect times and and wrong name. Maybe it's just as well that they're closing down on Wednesday. In any case I have to go back tomorrow to get that tooth out. Hopefully they'll remove the correct one from the right person.
And, I don't care, I'm going to set they "right" about the time (or is it maybe on "Clinic Time"?).
I woke up this morning and can't remember big chunks of yesterday, but enough to know it was a totally fucked day.
There was only one thing that I had to do - go to the dentist's and get my tooth extracted - and that was totally stuffed from start to finish. The plan was simple - catch the bus to Charlestown, have the tooth out, then come home and recover. I was going to catch the 10:10am bus from Barnsley, swap over at Glendale and arrive at Charlestown at about 11am for a Noon appointment.
I got at the stop by 10:05 and was still waiting there at 10:35. Another woman came down to wait for the bus and said that it hadn't come because if it did it would have driven past her house. I walked back to my home, got the car, gave Gwen (as the other woman was called) a lift and got to Glendale, where I might catch a government bus.
On the way we stopped in at the Sugar Valley Depot. It seems that the 10:10 bus had been in an accident! When I got to Glendale, I found that none of the buses would get me to Charlestown until at least 12:30pm. I phoned the Dental Surgery, and as the appointment was scheduled to be 20 minutes long, it was re-scheduled for 2:30pm that day.
I drove back home, and waited a bit, and then (successfully) caught the 12:10pm bus, getting to Charlestown at 12:49pm. Did a bit of window shopping, and went to the library, before the appointment. Then the real hell began.
Instead of the "big beefy bloke" dentists I'd had before, I got a short small women Dentist instead. Before you say that I'm sexist, realise that I have inherited teeth that are both "chalky" (mother's side) and have claw like roots (father's side). When extracted they tend to break, and the roots hang on regardless - it needs both strength and leverage to get them out.
Not only that, but her bedside manner was shit - saying things quickly and once only, and not even stopping to see if you've heard/understood them. After over a week of waiting (the tooth first ached not last Friday, but the Friday before) I wasn't really in a good head space. I just wanted the bloody thing out.
But, the dentist kept on saying "please cooperate" or "I can't cope with crying patients" or "maybe we should continue another day" (halfway into it!). I was on the verge of a panic attack for most of it. After the tooth broke and she realised that she'd have to cut the gum, she went off to finish on another patient, and came back 10 minutes later. In the mean time, the broken tooth felt very sore, and I was getting a sharp pain in the socket beneath it!!!!!
She ignored that pain, and started cutting away. Most of the tooth came out, but the roots are still stuck in there. The dentist asked me if I was allergic to anything and I got very angry over this, because while I'd waited I'd filled out a form with all that information on, including my allergy to penicillin!
The nurse (who had sat with me while the dentist was elsewhere) guided me out to the waiting area.I sat there with a glass of water and lots of tissues to wipe the tears away while they arranged a new appointment for assessment with the Dental Clinic at Wallsend.
I have a 10:30am appoint there today. There's more to this, but I have to go now and go under more torture.
Ugh - what a day.
I finally got to working on my Honours this morning. Trouble was, that my PC kept on freezing and rebooting while I tried to do so. I'm working with graphic files about 10-20 mb in size, and it seems that my hardware isn't up to it. The PCs been playing up a lot in the last month, and it may be that the graphics card I got for it is on the blink (typical of stuff bought at the Computer Markets). I might try a general windows re-install this weekend.
In any case, I just hadn't got the stuff done that I was supposed to, for the meeting with my supervisor today. And this isn't just a hardware problem. I had two weeks to do it before last week, and then I cancelled that meeting due to illness. I guess I'm not sure what I'm doing and why any more. Hey, I still have a clear vision of what the tarot Deck should be, but this is an exercise in colouring and shading the images for non-poster use. I'd rather work on composing more images, as I only have done done out of 22.
I got away later than planned. Made a detour to Cardiff on a library run and also to buy a windmill for my next door neighbour. Normally i don't get on with him too much. Last Saturday however I bought a replacement windmill from a shop in Cardiff. It was only a light weight construction of plastic and fabric - it looks like a flying insect with a cartoon head - but he wanted me to buy one for him, and even gave me the money!
Not what I expected.
Got to uni and went to the guest lecture. This was held at the art gallery in the top of the arts admin block. I can't remember the names of the lecturers (too busy trying to stem the pain in my tooth), though one came from Melbourne and the other from Christchurch, and they had an exhibition there. They were both "old school minimalists" -- which translates to "less is more" and some times this can certainly be the case. But they took themselves so seriously that they were inadvertently pompous and humorous. I didn't think much of the pieces on display and for the most part was bored with their explanations.
Afterwards was the Seminar, which was notable for featuring an "exchange staff member" who displayed a number of Artists Books from her university in New Zealand. Very impressive as a whole, and (because I had them on me) I gave her copies of Hypergraphia #4 and #5.
My supervisor suggested that we meet after the break in three weeks time, but I wasn't going to accept that. I feel "off course" and despair of getting back on track without a bit of help. In any case, I meet with him at 11am tomorrow.
Spend the night watching TV, being in a telephone Apana Management Committee meeting and later phoning Jessica out in Bathurst. gasp, feel so tired, and dispirited. Probably the flu and the tooth talking, but bleagh anyway.
