laura_seabrook: Politics! (sneetch)
It seems I have finally been able to reinstall Adobe CS5 (HURRAY).

Luckily I was able to find a discussion in the Adobe Forums by someone who had exactly the same circumstances and problem. The solution (if such it might be called) was manually killing the AdobeAIRInstaller process via the task manager (although I used something called Process Explorer) whenever it froze. That was three times for my install!

In retrospect I can posit some causes for this problem, which didn't occur when I originally installed CS5 last year:

  • Incompatibility with a new CPU (unlikely);
  • Incompatibility with a change in Win7 because of subsequent updates (which would explain why the last install went like clockwork);
  • My Win7 system might be slightly corrupt (and yes, I know some would say that Windows period is corrupt) and something that should have been there wasn't. This is quite likely, but a new install of Windows can wait a l-o-n-g time.

Anyway, I still have a heap of things to do, like restore a whole bunch of swatches and other stuff that I didn't backup, because I didn't know how. You'd think for any program (not just CS5 ones) that has a whole series of preferences and presets, the programs themselves would give you a way to export and import this settings. No such luck (or at least none that I know of in this case).

And where has all this got me? Back to my starting point, I'm afraid. Fireworks intermittently resets its preferences and loads the default keyboard shortcuts. Is that fixed? I won't know if and until it happens again. Sigh.

I still can't reinstall Adobe CS5. I have tried:

  • turning off the anti-virus and firewall software;
  • reinstalling Flash player;
  • reinstalling only Fireworks and Photoshop.

And the result is always the same - the installation hangs when it attempts to install/download help files. I thought, maybe there's a lot of help files, but when you come back after an hour and it's still at the same point, no. It occurred to me that maybe the help files have to be downloaded, and for some reason the server for them is off-line, but that seems so incredibly unprofessional. Adobe Support have not yet got back to me, so it's frustration all around.

STILL NOT IMPRESSED.

Means I can't work on webcomics. I still have Paintshop Pro installed, but using that would be a backward step.

Have had an ongoing problem with Adobe Fireworks. It keeps losing my preferences and keyboard shortcuts. Now, it doesn't do this all the time, but every so often I will run it (mostly to finish a web comic page) only to be confronted by a "welcome screen" (which I've turned off in preferences, and all the preferences and keyboard  shortcuts reset to default. Not a critical problem, but a bloody annoying one.

Anyway, I contacted Adobe support and got asked to reinstall all the CS5 apps! Have put this off until today, because I was worried there might be fuck-ups in the reinstall. Have just uninstalled everything, and now I have to run a "clean-up script". Gasp. Here's hoping.

Did a few more comic pages and was very happy with the result.

Vaguely naught comic CUT for those at work )

I've discovered that ALT, CTRL and SHIFT combinations with the left and right buttons on the mouse make colouring very easy to do. I spent last night copying over some palettes (there ought to be a proper editor for swatches). And in the image above, the showing was done using layer styles, and Tavern Title via Fireworks. It's still a good combo for me (oh, and if you're wondering, the little figurine outside the door is Priapus).
