Apart from actually liking the the show HOUSE M.D., it has other meanings and associations for me. This was one of two TV shows that I started watching regularly with my late friend Jenny. Jenny was a trained nurse so she got the medical stuff  on first viewing. Me on the other hand, I sometimes needed help (except that it was -almost - never Lupus!).

Watching TV shows and films was something we could do together. She was housebound with MS for a long time and then went to a nursing home it was pretty much her only entertainment. It good to share time with her that way. We could watch a show and chat ias well, and talk about things in the shows we watched. We tried watching LOST as well, but Jenn gave up on that midway through the 2nd season (I only came back to it  just before the last season). But  House was something we always watched, even the specials on the DVD sets. In the season where House picked new staff, we double guessed who'd get eliminated.  She never saw the last two seasons of it, dying in January 2010.

So watching HOUSE always reminded me of Jenn. Ending the show sort of ended an era for me. Sure I could always watch the show again from the start, but it just wouldn't be the same. But not only that, but the final plot arc sort of mirrored what happened to me in real life (well, in part).

I knew that the MS was slowly killing her, but we had some time before the worst of its effects would happen.  Or so we thought. Jenn had a stroke in the nursing home and then recovered (mostly). I had reconciled to this  and had a busy week and instead of seeing her on the Wednesday, got there Thursday. On getting there I discovered that she'd taken a turn for the worse and was on oxygen.. She was moistly coherent though and her mother was there, but very worried, that Jenn was dying. She seemed to rally a bit  but no one would say anything to Jenny about their fears. After her mother left I said "She's worried you're dying". We both made a joke of it, watch a film (a Pink Panther film with Peter Sellers in it) and then I had to leave to catch a bus home.  I asked if I should pop in Friday to see how she was and she told me she'd be OK, to come Monday.  Just before I went she tanked me for my time with her. I thought that was odd but just said "Anythime".

Of course she was dead by next morning.

And I have always wondered if she knew, or even if somehow she shortened her own life. We'd talked about it some times and she had plans to take an overdose of pain filler when things got too bad. I never knew how serious she was when she mentioned this. But that Thursday it seemed like she'd lost the use of her last good hand, so she would have lost control of most things. I knew that was a point that would distress her. And it's haunted me ever since, not knowing if maybe she wanted me somewhere else, so that she could die in peace. Because that's how Pegasus went. I didn't know what to do, went across the road to get help and he was dead by the time we returned.

And I saw a similar thing come up in House (I don't want to do spoilers on this) between two good friends and one of them not wanting to linger a painful death, and all I could think of was Jenny. And mucking around with the episodes just drove me crazy.

FUCK IT, I STILL MISS JENNY.

I was annoyed with the Ten Network with how they wound up the final House season.

They showed part of it earlier this year, one episode a week, and then it vanished. Then recently, they started showing the remainder of the episodes, but it became unpredictable. I don't usually watch the channel 10 though I do watch channel 11 for Next Gen Repeats. So while I caught the fact it was back on (and in the previous timeslot on a Wednesday night) it was only by luck that I found out that they were showing double episodes back-to-back.

I really don't understand when they do that - show multiple episodes all at once. I can only think of three reasons why they do: a lack of content, or maybe they're under contract to show and want to get it done as quickly as possible, or it's the finale and it's a double episode. Ever since digital channels the programming on certain channels has been erratic. Channel 11 started showing double episodes of Next Gen, and double episodes of Deep Space 9 for a while. Then Deep Space Nine was taken off and episodes of Voyager were show - before DS9 had completed it run of repeats?! Then they started sowing double episodes of Voyager, and triple Episodes of Next Gen! I mean it's nice and all, but makes no sense. If you were a programmer couldn't you just show an episode of Next Gen, followed by Deep Space Nine and then Voyage, and then have another time where you did the same? Why show three of the same thing in a row?  Mind you they do this with CSI on Sunday nights as well, showing the original, CSI Miama, and CSI New York in a row. A mystery.,

Anyway, the thing was this, I started taping double episodes of House and that was OK, but then when it was obvious a certain was sick, it was clear that I missed an episode somewhere. I still taped double episode on the Wednesday and planned to watch them on the Weekend. Had been ill and running around doing a lot of stuff last week so I hadn't got around to double-check the TV programming. Then on channel surfing Friday I discover a House special on and the FINAL EPISODE on after it! Huh?!

I quickly set the STB to record for both, but I had a feeling I'd missed stuff again. Sure enough, after checking a list of episodes it was clear that I'd missed one between last week and the week before, and also one just before the Final episode. So very frustrating. I could of course  with the bandwidth I have just watch the lot online, but half the fun of house was watching it weekly and using the STB to record it. And if I didn't have the recording ability on it I'd be stuffed. IN the end I watched the missing episodes before I saw the finale, but it was still very very annoying.

I have much better luck with Fringe. Two episodes are shown weekly on another network, around midnight, but repeated as double episodes later in the week. There's a glitch on my STBs where if you attempt to timed recording over midnight it often doesn't take. But the double episode is in the early morning so much better - but I still check the programming weekly!

The ending of HOUSE M.D. made me very sad as well, but that's in the next post.

Bloody typical. I had thought that I'd missed a lot of episodes of both HOUSE and FRINGE on Australian Free-to-Air TV. That's not exactly the case. Turns out that after the first episode of season 7 of House being shown on TEN, it went to FOX (pay TV)! And Fringe was dropped at the very last moment! What wankerss - grrrr!

I'm fairly sure I can watch watch house online, and maybe even Fringe as well. But it's still as annoying as anything (I like my TV shows)!!!

I realised earlier today that I watch a lot of shows with Doctors. There is:
Dr Who: Dr Who
,
Dr Gregory House: Dr Gregory House

Dr Jacob Hood: Dr Jacob Hood

and

Dr Walter Bishop: Dr Walter Bishop

I think the First and Last are the most fun.

Mould

My brother Mark and his wife Dee dropped in Tuesday evening. We sat in my study chatting and Dee pointed out that I had mould on the ceiling above my PC. In fact, it looks like this:

Mould in the Study

Now I had until then thought that mould was only a problem for the building, and didn't really affect the inhabitants (which is why I haven't done much about it). However, according to Dee it can cause respiratory problems, exacerbate asthma, and induce depression. All of which I've had in abundance of late.

shockedIt was never this large before but there's been a fair chunk of wet weather in the last year. And, though this is the worst patch, it's also spread throughout the house. On Wednesday I bought a container of bleach and a squeegee mop and over the weekend will see about removing some of this. It's a big job, but I guess it's got to be done.
