I have discovered that by reverting my Live Journal posts to public, that I can make three posts in one go: to Dreamwidth, LiveJournal and Facebook. You see, (with the exception of Writer's Block) I mostly post nowadays to Dreamwidth, and have it set to cross-post to LiveJournal. But I also have LiveJournal set to cross-post public entries (can't do it with private) to Facebook., or:

Dreamwidth »» LiveJournal »» Facebook.

Neat eh? It means I can keep the friends on each up to date on stuff I do want to write about, which mostly is personal stuff happening in my life. But not having to go into Facebook to do that means less distraction and less bullshit, which has been a major issue for me for sometime. The pages I created there are now run by "Avatar accounts" (ones I created for my SecondLife avatars) but they have a small list of friends mainly so I can still play word games there.

I know it sounds odd, but it's working for me. :)   Here's my new cover image for Facebook:

I decided, aftera year and a half, to upgrade to a paid account. Not sure why, but it seemed like the right thing to do (and I get my userpics back and can select a larger variety of styles).

Stylish

Stylish is "a Firefox and Thunderbird extension that lets you install and manage user styles". I found this really cool for Facebook. See the example below, which is the AERO style:

It also works with Youtube and Live Journal, though so far the LJ styles haven't impressed me much, a sthey tend towards altering things like buttons and the size of comments text..

Angry

Go read LiveJournal has done something stupid again and  Privacy Alert: LiveJournal Tracking Outbound Links!

I've already taken action on this, and if you value your privacy (and have a free account) you might as well.

I might swap over to reading/reviewing LJ and Facebook in the afternoon/evenings.

My most creative period is in the morning, and I'm finding it's getting syphoned off by both. Similiar to the problem I had earlier in the year.

I just got a spam comment from [livejournal.com profile] dfgge. I've deleted it as SPAM, but that's the first time I've had one like that. Might have to change some setting on this journal I think.

Seems I'm not the only one.

I'm doing the obligatory thing and just mentioning that I've started an LJ community. This one's called Virtual World News and Reviews and you can find it here: [livejournal.com profile] vw_news. Like to to look at different Virtual Worlds, not just second life, and got tired that there wasn't an active community where people could post news and reviews that weren't just for one system (there is one, moderated, but which has never been used). This will only succeed if people contribute to and read it, but that's the story with all LJ Communities.

I came across this icon on LJ just now. And it's absolutely right!
laura_seabrook: (Default)

I got bored with the previous style and changed it to this...

...which is perhaps less "stylish" but more practical. It's one of the  Minimalism  styles and each entry has edit entry and edit tags for my own posts, which I like. Pretty plain and straight forward otherwise.

[Error: unknown template qotd]Here's the thing - since I reverted back to a free account I only have six "official" icons, so I decided to bypass it entirely and loaded as many as I want to Photobucket. Then I just insert them into my posts as I desire. So, maybe this one...

...it's from a comic of mine about BLACK DOGs

I've decided not to renew a paid membership to Live Journal. The main thing I liked about having that was the range of icons it gave me. A free account only gives you a range of six. However, nothing stopped me from uploading userpics to Photobucket, and then using either the autoreplace function on SeMagic, or FoxReplace (a Firefox add-on) to access those icons easily.

The follow is the current set I've created using this method. It was a little fiddly to set up, but I can even add then to non-LJ comments:

Seems I'm back to a free account on LJ, with only six userpics. Hmmm - do I want to pay to get more? My current set is now (mysteriously):

Bored

Happy

Laura

Pets

Tired

TV

It may be that LJ has picked the icons I use most (which says a lot about me). I can probably change this, though I wonder if I should. I tend to be "cheap" when it comes to spending money - I have some in a paypal account but have no credit card, so payment (if forthcoming) has to be through that.

Or, I might be even cheaper still. Even if I can only select six icons, it seems that the rest are still at http://www.livejournal.com/editpics.bml and I only have to copy the image location (Firefox is good at that) and insert it manually into a post (like with this paragraph).

I've swapped over to UnEarthed style on my journal. It got rid of things (like the tags column) that weren't that useful, and for me the text and layout is easier for me to read.

LJ Renewal

Dec. 17th, 2008 03:53 pm

Just renewed my paid account here for 2 more months via pay pal. It only costs $US 5 but with the recession being what it is, that's $AU 7.59. I've come to like the extra icons (and no advertising) with the paid account but I ought to do it properly some time.

And I do use LJ a lot. Facebook is fun (and the Scrabble app is why I'm still using that) but I like writing, and using LJ despite its flaws.

As reminded by [livejournal.com profile] stephen_dedman's post (I did the same thing last year).

Instructions: Copy the first line of the first post you did in LJ each month (optional - add a link to that day).

I was trying to do something like this three weeks ago, but didn't have the right software (I used DVD slideshow GUI and ImgBurn) or frame of mind to accomplish it.

Just discovered that something was wrong with Thunderbird, and the folder with all my Live Journal replies wasn't showing incoming comments. I thought it odd that I wasn't getting any comments - but now I know I did.

Expect lots of comments back!

Now here's the thing - I can't remember.

I have my suspicions, but I can't be sure. The first entry I ever did was on the 8th June 2003 in the [livejournal.com profile] octobrianaoz journal. Now this entry is about seeing the first sequel to The Matrix, and of staying up late to research Blogs for my TAFE course.

I was studying library science at Newcastle (actually at Islington) TAFE at the time, and I think on top of everything else I raided various sections of the TAFE library. One section I went through was 741.59 or there-abouts, and found an interesting book about web comics. Another section was the low 001s which was computer and in that I found the rough guide to Blogs. That may have been where I heard of LJ. However there are two other possibilities.

I had just discovered The Matrix Explained Forums which was a hotbed of hysteria over the possible meanings of the end of the sequel (was Zion a real place or another layer in the Matrix? How come Neo could stop the hunter-killers with a wave of his hand, would Trinity have a baby in #3? - that sort of thing). It may have been that someone there had an LJ account.

I was also (and still am) on the Wombat list, and there was a cross-over between people on that list and on LJ.

Puzzling, but I won't lose any sleep over it.

New Theme

laura_seabrook: (Default)

After being inspired by [livejournal.com profile] redcountess' journal, I'm changed my theme (which is now Bats Purple Expressive by Lilia Ahner). Still needs a bit of tweaking, but I like the look.

laura_seabrook: (Default)

I may have done this one before, but am biting again. Infected by [livejournal.com profile] merlot_winters.

This meme finally hit critical mass with me, and it must be done.

Comment and I will:

  1. Tell you why I befriended you.
  2. Associate you with something -
fandom, a song, a colour, a photo, etc.
  3. Tell you something I like about you.
  4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
  5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
  6. Tell you my favourite user pic of yours.
  7. In return, you must post this in your LJ

I think I will be withdrawing from my mailing lists and LJ for a bit, and retiring Elsie Broek for a month.

This is all to do with focus. maintaining that has been difficult to do lately. I have much to think about.

If you need to contact me, you can still IM me.

My final post is on Memorial Day in Second Life.
