Was thinking of Jenny earlier in the week, when they repeated a Pink Panther film on TV. It was one of the last films we watched together before she died. And now, because of a strange tangent:

Found at the post office in ANU last week:

Yep - here's where Scotty's sidekick in the new Trek film comes from.

Star Trek

Star TrekI have been anticipating this film more than any other in the last year and a half. A film about Kirk, Spock and the rest during their academy days? This was mooted ages ago but instead we got Nemesis which while very well produced, was less than satisfactory. In fact it looked like that film almost "killed the franchise". That being the case, and the fact that J.J. Abrams was producer on Lost and Cloverfield made me a little uncertain as to what I'd see.  I've been a fan of Trek ever since I watched it in the 60s, so I'm hard to please.

The short review of this film is: Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes :) from which you might deduce that I liked it. The longer review's below.

Minor Spoilers )

This is a "reboot" rather than a "reset" button, and this is quite clear in the credits with one character having "prime" appended to their name. There's already a sequel in the works, though I could even believe a new TV series could be launched by the film too - otherwise why use the original theme at the end (a very nice touch)? Wishful thinking perhaps. :)

So for me, a very long term fan, they got this film right, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, even if it does make my complete collection of "Star Trek fact files" obsolete.

I came across this icon on LJ just now. And it's absolutely right!

First, Trek:

Second, Watchmen:

They are either going to be very very good, or very very bad.

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry died on December 18, 2008 at her home in Bel-Air, Los Angeles, California as a result of complications from leukaemia. She was 76.

As other Trek fans will know, she was first seen (in the pilot) on Star Trek in the role of "Number One", though was was more widely known in the role of Christine Chapel. Later in her career she appeared as Ambassador Troi in Deep Space Nine and later in a guest role on Babylon 5. She also provided the regular voice of the on-board computers of Federation star ships for Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and most of the Star Trek movies (including the yet to be released film). That being so, she was the actor most heard via Star Trek.

Majel Barrett married Gene Roddenberry in 1969 and after his death she was Executive Producer of Earth: Final Conflict (in which she also played the character Dr. Julianne Belman), and Andromeda - both based on his original ideas.

I don't know about you, but that's taken the shine off my day.

OK, I'm a long term Trek fan. Getting a little impatient about the next film, which follows the original characters from the academy. If you go to the official website, you will see the trailer that's been out for ages, and a selection of photos like this:

StarTrekXI

But that's about it. A little nervous about what they might do with the material. I love old Trek even with all it's flaws. Will it be "ruined" or worse yet "updated. Hollywood seems to be undergoing a period where it's remaking and recycling proven hits. Bond has been restarted and there's talk of TV series remake of The Prisoner. Of course the director also did "Lost"  and Cloverfield (and you might remember how that got me in a frenzy).

Gasp - how am I going to wait until May next year.

I was in the Star Trek Museum in Second Life and am highly impressed with the Science floor of main deck. Anyway, one of the rooms there has a version of power point presentation (one of several it turns out): Watch Star Trek with a Physicist (II). The physicist is Don Lincoln who works at Fermilab.

Most interesting!

OK, two things connected to Trek:

What next (expects a barrage of weird links).

Er, what?!

I've been watching a library copy of How William Shatner Changed the World. A not so serious look at how Star Trek (not Shatner) influenced technology and culture.

As a Trekker I love watching it, but hmm, well I can see why Shatner now plays Denny Crane.

Alan Shore: Denny Crane!
Denny Crane: Alan Shore!
Alan Shore: Leaders of men!
Denny Crane: With bulleyes on our asses!

Synchronicity!

One entry above the other on my friends page - [livejournal.com profile] jenndolari pointed me to what might (hmm) be an "Edward Gorey" version of Trek (hey, I'd buy it!); right after [livejournal.com profile] seventhsqueal pointed me to what might be fan art (not just about Trek, but also Potter and "The King") that surely, ought to be presented on felt cushions(see sample right)!

The Smithson strip, referred to in the first of the above, looks graphically interesting.

After posting about the Trek-UFO video, [livejournal.com profile] curi_oz_wolf pointed me to the New Voyages Website.

Hmmm, looks sorta interesting. Trekfans producing more Old Trek episodes. I haven't downloaded any yet, only the trailers, but after watching seasons 1 and 2 of Trek the other month, I can tell that look like the "real" trailers on the DVDs.

There's also a site called Hidden Frontier, and Star Trek Intrepid, which also seems to be advertising fan videos. Never heard of these before - must be leading a sheltered existence out here since NovaTrek folded.

As spotted at Warped Corps (or if you want the real thing).

Check out Useless Facts for a bit of trivia about Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, who would have to be the most often heard actress in the history of Star Trek.

[profile] mycosys just referred to some comic he'd found that seemed like a cross between Star Wars Episode I, Star Trek and the Carry On films.

This put me to thinking, if there were such a carry on film - a version of Star Trek - who would play which role? Here's my guesses:

ROLE ACTOR
Commanding Officer (Kirk) Sid James
Science Officer (Spock) Charles Hawtrey or Kenneth Williams
Chief Medical Officer (McCoy) Kenneth Williams or Charles Hawtrey or Jim Dale
Nurse (Chapel) Barbara Windsor
Communications (Uhura) Hattie Jacques
Chief Engineer (Scotty) Jim Dale
Helmsman (Sulu) Kenneth Connor
Navigator (Chekov) Peter Butterworth
Yeoman (Rand) Valerie Leon / Patsy Rowlands
Security (red shirts et al) Eric Barker / Harry H Corbett / Bernard Cribbins
Federation Admirals Terry Scott / Jon Pertwee
Federation Officials Bob Monkhouse / Leslie Phillips
Conniving Civilian Phil Silvers
Civilian Woman in position of Power Joan Sims
Klingon Villain (Koth, Kolos?)  Frankie Howerd
Visionary Scientist who 'gets it wrong' William Hartnell or Charles Hawtrey

I imagine the plot would be reminiscent of Carry On up the Khyber and Carry On Jack.
