Remember last year when I read The Mammoth Book of Best New Manga? Well Volume 2 is now in the Newcastle Library System.

This collection is just as impressive. I rather like the range displayed by the contributors. This also includes a colour section in the middle, which is used to advantage (see the Crush sample). It also includes some yaoi which is very nicely done.

I look forward to #3.

Unicorn Jelly - main page

Finished reading Unicorn Jelly this morning. I read the final 331pages of it in more or less a single session. The last time I did something like this was when I discovered Venus Envy and read the first 200 pages all in one go.

Must say, doing so greatly enhanced my experience of it. Very touching story, and I can see how Pastel Defender Heliotrope came from it. Well, I guess now I can start reading To Save Her.

Or maybe go to bed first. It's after 3am after all.

Genshiken

I've been reading a manga that's in at the local library called Genshiken.

It's about a group of students who belong to "The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture" or Gendai Shikaku Bunka Kenkyūkai in Japanese. They're all otaku, obsessed with manga and anime.

I read volumes 5-8 and thoroughly enjoyed them. I just love the ins and outs of making yaoi dōjinshi, boyfriends, cosplay and just getting on with life.

Must see if I can hunt down more volumes. I've read that there's now an anime of the series too.

I just finished a great read from the library called The Mammoth Book of Best New Manga. With more than 500 pages, and with 25 stories, it took me a couple of days to read (not quite as long as Bone, but that's 1000+ pages).

I really loved the variety found in this volume. Favourites were Kate Brown's Station, Sofia Falkenhem's Instant Noodles, Jason Cobley & Neill Cameron's Bulldog: Empire (from which the cover at right is taken), Asa Ekstrom's New Shoes and Andi Watson's Princess At Midnight - but they were all excellent.

I hope this is an annual publication, and look forward to the next volume.

Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] mundanecircus's comments:

What's your anime-girl stereotype?!

Rebel Girl:Wow, sorry..ain't gonna stare you again! You're violent and have little patience with pathetic beings, but you can also be very protective and caring with the weak. Relax that Don't-even-think-about-it look of yours and stop scaring people away!

VIZ website linkI've been reading a manga called Boys over Flowers, by Yoko Kamio.

There's something about this shojo that's hooked me. It's the "love story" between Tsukasa Domyoji (spoilt uber-rich boy) and Tsukushi Makino (absolutely poor but honest girl). Their relationship is anything but easy, and so far I'm up to volume 23 (only missed vol 22, but the library didn't have it). VIZ have published up to volume 26, though unlike Ramna 1/2 (36 volumes), I have no idea how many volumes there are left to go.

Wouldn't mind looking at the anime of this, to see what they've done with it too.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales (Art Gallery Road, The Domain, Sydney2000 Telephone 02 9225 1744 or Toll Free 1800 679 278) are having an exhibition of OSAMU TEZUKA's work, starting 23rd February. Allied to this is a free season of Studio Ghibli films, starting 21st of February!

Starting with Astro Boy and Kimba, the work of Osamu Tezuka has had a big influence on me (and of course, millions of Japanese and other fans world wide). Astro and Kimba showed me (at a very early age) that you don't just have to do "superhero" stories in comics, and that what counted was purity of heart and vision over technical proficiency (though he had both) and popularity (though his work is immensely popular).

A few years ago English collections of Astro Boy manga started turning up in the local libraries. It was great to finally read the originals (and also see how the 1980s series came close to the originals). I look forward to finally seeing the original work of the master.
