The other day I heard the song Galileo by Jordy Lane on TripleJ which is a very pretty "atheist anthem". I rather liked it, and in fact you can hear it direct or even download it from TripleJ's Unearthed section (no video yet, though).

I couldn't help compare it to other songs about Galileo that I've heard. The one that comes right to mind is one by the Indigo Girls. I used to hear different versions of this all around the Perth folk scene in the early 90s. Then there's also one by Amy Grant (and the same song set to Dr Who clips); a groovy one by mothercoat (er, what are the lyrics?); Declan O'Rourke (Eurovision quality perhaps); Toto Sorioso (maybe the same as the previous, hard to get the lyrics); a theme for a Japanese film of the same name; My Galileo by by Alexandra & Konstantin (which really is a Eurovision song!); Dj Sephy; Asian Kung-Fu Generation (OK, it mentions Galileo once, but I like it); Parody 3 - Best Friends (WTF - is that AQUA?); and Galileo Galilei (there are more, but I've made my point).

So what is it about Galileo Galilei that inspires so much song?
