...but this cheers me up:

 and this is ridiculous!

whereas this is DEMENTED:

Last night I had the strangest dream
I sailed away to China in a little rowboat to find ya
And you said you had to get your laundry cleaned
Didn't want no one to hold you, What does that mean?
And you said...

Chorus
Ain't nothin' gonna break my stride
Nobody's gonna slow me down
Oh no, I've got to keep on movin'
Ain't nothin' gonna break my stride
I'm running and I won't touch ground
Oh no, I've got to keep on movin'

You're on the road and now you're plain as gone (you pray you'll last)
The road behind (beyond) was rocky, but now you're feeling cocky
You look at me and you see your past
Is that the reason why you're running so fast?
And you said...

Chorus

Never let another guy like you, work me over
Never let another guy like you, drag me under
If I meet another guy like you, I will tell him
Never want another guy like you, how to say:

Never let another girl like you whip me over
Never let another girl like you drag me under
If I meet another girl like you I will tell her
Never want another girl like you have to say - oh!

Chorus x3

This is a song from HEDWIG that always makes me cry. It seems that it's also an often covered tune:

Just heard a version of Don't fear the reaper from the Prozak for Lovers album. Strange but c-o-o-l. Samples of the other songs, like Aqualung and Rebel Rebel are similarly strange.

I'm surprised that I missed this. There used to be a show called Money or the Gun hosted by Andrew Denton, long before he was giving people Enough Rope. Anyway, it was a running joke that each show he'd have a different band in doing a different version of Stairway to Heaven.

Anyway, after the show was over they brought out a video and CD that collected these. Carol gave me a copy of the video for my birthday back in 1993. You can see all 29 of these (including one by Rolf Harris, and even a spoken word version by Leonard Teale) on this playlist. But there's more!

Here's the song: backwards (sounds much the same, but look at this and at the secret nuclear message - which is really by Dimmu Borgir); X FACTOR 2-Matteo Becucci (nice voice); Ocarina for iPhone; Stanley Jordan (very liquid); London Philharmonic; Far Corporation; Dave Grohl (stuffing it up); Frank Zappa; Leningrad Cowboys; single iPhone versionHeart; Apocalyptica (expects to see a H.I.M. version soon); Never The Bride; The O'jays (it's a different song!); Gregorian Masters Of Chant; ...on Harp; Anime; Mario Paint and of course, the original.

There's more 9330 of them in fact, so this is truly an undead song.

shockedThe previous got me thinking about the worst covers of songs I've heard. Now thinking that cover of a song is the worst is a pretty subjective thing I know, but it hasn't stopped the folks on Youtube from uploading their choices!

Is this version of The Final Countdown the worst you've heard?

Kevin  mentioned the Lady Sovereign appropriation of Close to Me called So Human, which used the tune, and throws out most of the words (some are still there)!

Kevin absolutely hates it as it offends his "Gothic Sensibilities". However there are stranger versions, like The Dismemberment Plan, acoustic ukulele (what is it with Cure songs and ukuleles?),  and Inflow. Then again, the above isn't really a cover version is it? It's my like a recycled media thing, so I'm adding a new tag).

Know of any other examples of recycled media?

laura_seabrook: (Default)

surprisedYes, this joins the ranks of "undead media". There's a playlist on youtube with no less than 68 versions of it! I'm sure there are others too...

Pop Muzik - the original (this was on ABC1 last weekend):

And there's more:
Avatar/Sims version, Tricky (sound only), Neural-M (sound only), U2 in Mexico City, CSS, Hot Neon Magic (???!!!), and ed edd n eddy (animated). There's more, pages of them!

The other day I heard the song Galileo by Jordy Lane on TripleJ which is a very pretty "atheist anthem". I rather liked it, and in fact you can hear it direct or even download it from TripleJ's Unearthed section (no video yet, though).

I couldn't help compare it to other songs about Galileo that I've heard. The one that comes right to mind is one by the Indigo Girls. I used to hear different versions of this all around the Perth folk scene in the early 90s. Then there's also one by Amy Grant (and the same song set to Dr Who clips); a groovy one by mothercoat (er, what are the lyrics?); Declan O'Rourke (Eurovision quality perhaps); Toto Sorioso (maybe the same as the previous, hard to get the lyrics); a theme for a Japanese film of the same name; My Galileo by by Alexandra & Konstantin (which really is a Eurovision song!); Dj Sephy; Asian Kung-Fu Generation (OK, it mentions Galileo once, but I like it); Parody 3 - Best Friends (WTF - is that AQUA?); and Galileo Galilei (there are more, but I've made my point).

So what is it about Galileo Galilei that inspires so much song?

I'd just finished ready a recent issue of JMag which had a The Cure theme to it. They mentioned cover bands so I thought I'd check out youtube to see what there was there.

A search of "The Cure" +covers brings up a whole slew of entries ranging from amateur to well known bands (including Robert Smith doing a cover of a Lennon song). One of the most popular songs to cover is Just like Heaven which has no less than 417 results! Covers of A Forest comes in at 121 entries, In Between Days only has 53 entries, and Love Cats at 40.

There's a lot of varied cover stuff about, from AFI - Just Like Heaven by AFIScarlett Johansson - Boys Don't CryTricky - Love Cats and Editors - Lullaby. There's some absolutely dreadful versions too, like this one, though I like it when the cover version includes Robert Smith!

Here's two favourites:

Lovesong on Ukulele

Just Like Heaven by Dinosaur Jr.

Always loved this song by Depeche Mode. Here's the original:

and here's a strange mix version:

a darker remix:

and if you want more, follow this search (yes, it's one of those "undead songs" that pervades Youtube).

DIGG radio just had an acoustic version of this on, and it made me feel sweetly sad.

Gasp, check out all the versions of this on youtube!

This is the original and is from the Starfish album, as were Destination, Reptile, North, South, East And West, and Hotel Womb.

Other Church songs I love include Already Yesterday, Tantalized, Magician among the Spirits Part 1 & Part 2 (which is all one part on the album of the same name), Shadow Cabinet, and of course Metropolis (which I saw them perform way back in 2000 at the Metro in Sydney). Actually, I love most Church songs, and when I've missed them live in Newcastle, it's been a real Grind and a real Comedown and I just feel like Fading Away.

I came across (a scary looking) one of these on via a post by [livejournal.com profile] jenndolari, who has been extremely sleep deprived of late. However, there seems to be a whole series of them. They sound like something out of the TV show "Lost".

And what about this?

laura_seabrook: (Default)

Just heard this on DIGG Radio:

I think this is is ever so beautiful. And then, there's the MONSOON version:

And I really do like the Jakatta version too!
