A prim version of the Basement set I exported as an XML model from Second Life, which looked like this:

It took a little while to load but when every thing's on my own PC, that hardly matters. Textures can be substituted, replaced or re-done, but the original hull layout took some time to build, was functional and right for the Machinomic (the comic version on a Machinima) was making in SL. Of course I've also bought lots of custom stuff like furniture in SL that's non-transferable, but most of it HASN'T BEEN SEEN YET, so I can replace it at my leisure, and create a close approximation of the exterior that HAS been seen. :)

This seems to me the sort of project I could get into on the weekends while finishing my Masters. I already know what I'm doing (because I've done it already) but in the long run this is a better way for me to go. I can still use SL when I need to, but with a home server with several sims and worlds I could easily leave things set up until I'm ready to work on them again, whereas in SL it either would get de-rezzed or I'd need to pay rent.

PLUS, nothing excites me more than learning a skill and applying it to effect, and setting all this up and using it would be exactly that.

"Simona Stick" sitting on an imported model, in a 1 Sim world on my Studio PC. I tried Sim-on-a-Stick a few months back on my RecRoom computer and it seemed OK, but at the time I was drawing graphic Novel Pages and didn't have time to really assess it.

Today I found that it worked OK, but seemed "laggy", which could be for any number of reasons (like my running other programs on the same PC, like the viewer, Firefox, and a music player). But it RAN, and I suspect performance might be optimised by having a a faster router (maybe) and a dedicated server PC on my home network which would solely run the world(s).
