A prim version of the Basement set I exported as an XML model from Second Life, which looked like this:

It took a little while to load but when every thing's on my own PC, that hardly matters. Textures can be substituted, replaced or re-done, but the original hull layout took some time to build, was functional and right for the Machinomic (the comic version on a Machinima) was making in SL. Of course I've also bought lots of custom stuff like furniture in SL that's non-transferable, but most of it HASN'T BEEN SEEN YET, so I can replace it at my leisure, and create a close approximation of the exterior that HAS been seen. :)

This seems to me the sort of project I could get into on the weekends while finishing my Masters. I already know what I'm doing (because I've done it already) but in the long run this is a better way for me to go. I can still use SL when I need to, but with a home server with several sims and worlds I could easily leave things set up until I'm ready to work on them again, whereas in SL it either would get de-rezzed or I'd need to pay rent.

PLUS, nothing excites me more than learning a skill and applying it to effect, and setting all this up and using it would be exactly that.

"Simona Stick" sitting on an imported model, in a 1 Sim world on my Studio PC. I tried Sim-on-a-Stick a few months back on my RecRoom computer and it seemed OK, but at the time I was drawing graphic Novel Pages and didn't have time to really assess it.

Today I found that it worked OK, but seemed "laggy", which could be for any number of reasons (like my running other programs on the same PC, like the viewer, Firefox, and a music player). But it RAN, and I suspect performance might be optimised by having a a faster router (maybe) and a dedicated server PC on my home network which would solely run the world(s).

Have needed to format and re-install Windows on my Studio PC. At the moment it's so flaky that I can't be sure which application will or won't run each time I boot. This is mostly the Adobe apps of CS5 and a few others, But I think in the 2.5 years I've owned it I've installed and uninstalled  too much stuff for it to be easily fixed. And an intermittent fault is worse than one that's always busted, because it can be far more frustrating.

This week though I've been getting closure on loose ends. Apart from teh Polare comic and article, I've also needed to finish Part 9 of Return to Second Life. This is partly because then it can go on hiatus for a couple of months while I work on the graphic novels, but also because it uses ExitReality, a sort of virtual world avatar VRML thing that works on that PC, but not5 on the RecRoom PC (who knows why. I might never get the thing working again, so I needed to finish that part of the webcomic so I wouldn't need to access it any more. At pity if that's the case. VRML models look more like those models  made from books of punch-out paper shapes. They have a charm in their own right that the carved foam look of prims in Second Life don't. I'll actually miss seeing these.

But the graphic novels (especially for the confirmation) MUST come first. I'm done with it now and will format (after backing up) tomorrow. Will get back to drawing some Tales pages as well. :)

I was shooting footage in a variety of virtual worlds for a machnima I was making. SAome of these I haven't been to in almost a year. Just amused me how different the Avatars are:

Which do you reckon I enjoy most?

Thought I'd look at Onverse, which is billed as "...a free online virtual world full of fun people and cool things to do. Unlike 2D social networks that simply give you a profile page, we give you a free 3D home, clothing, furniture and some tools to get you started. It's your new virtual life in a massive virtual world".

Outside in Onverse

I found the controls very easy to use and the the environment flowed easily, and background sounds made a big difference as well. Not much you can do to customise your avatar just yet, and most activities look like they may be geared towards use of in-world currency.

An Onverse Map

It makes me think of Gaia Online but with better graphics.

THERE.COM is closing today. It's the 10th here in Australia, but still the 9th in west cost of the USA.

I tried There just after discovering Second Life and for a while it was a contender for the main virtual world that I'd be interacting with. But there were a number of problems back then. There didn't seem to have much in the way of freebies with which to play with, to see if it was worth developing. Also, because I'd tried SL first, There's interface seemed utterly alien to me. The biggest fun I had in There back than was riding my hoverboard about (and it was fun!).

Elsie_Broek and her hoverboard

Anyway, I heard it was closing and decided to take another look - much the same strange "Island Paradise" thing but also much more developed. And I actually had a lot of fun exploring and riding my hover board (again). In a way, I'm sad to see this go, even with all the quirks it had. Whatever There was in general, in many ways it was original, and that should not discarded casually.

Bye bye THERE.COM!

Found Metaplace via a chat on Metaverse. My first world:

Metaplace Interface

It made me think of a cross between Lively/New Lively and Gaia Online, but done properly. I can can actually find and return to the places I create, and uploading images from your own computer, and importing 3D objects from Sketchup's 3D warehouse is easy. It has the usual economy and (for once) you can make and sell your own stuff.
