Day 8

Our first real day of cleaning today.

We marched down to a local hotel, were introduced to the executive housekeeper and were set to work on an entire floor. Two trainees never showed today, so we had three teams of two cleaning nine rooms. Despite the fact that there was no hard lifting, it was hard work. It was constant, and when we were done after four hours, I ached. I was also very hungry!

If I get employed in this line of work, I will be a lot fitter!

But oh, my feet ached today. the shoes I'm wearing are not the best, and on the way home I bought a couple of pairs of insoles for next week.

Day 7

We did cultural differences in training today.

All I can say is, some of my fellow trainees have very funny ideas. Funny how when they say "Australian" what they really mean is "Australians of British descent".

Felt slightly ill after the session (but not because of that) and decided to hang out in a library for an hour or so instead of buying pet food. Tomorrow's the big day, when we start doing rooms for real in a local hotel.

Big day tomorrow - time to go to sleep.

Day 6

Much better today - no sickness or headaches.

We looked at "Lost and Found" on the course, and although some of the contents of my bagels had spilt into my backpack, it was still a good day. We watched a video about the hospitality industry that featured a Globologist - a guy who changed some of the 3400 light globes in a large hotel!

Afterwards I went and got a statement of befits from Centrelink, visited the library (good grief - the original 300 which looks very daft) and then to the employment agency, where I picked up a resume and asked if I could be sent on a First Aid course. I could, and they'll pay for me to go to Red Cross for one. You beauty!

Got home and all was well. Bobby was fine (and no "poo surprises" so far) and everything going OK.

I feel good about this course - I can visualise myself making up beds and cleaning rooms.

Day 5

Felt ill for most of today.

Had a headache, felt shaky, kept losing concentration. I also went to the toilet a lot. As we were studying hygiene and food preparation, it occurred to me that I had Gastroenteritis. It didn't help that we had almost on long session from 9am to 2pm. There was a break at 11am, and the trainer was keen to go all the way until 2, but I was really flaking out, pining for lunch. Had a bagel and that kept me going until 2pm. I didn't feel better until I had another bagel, an orange and apple, and a couple of panadol (oh, and a giant choc muffin at the hospital helped too). I think too that air conditioning didn't help much either.

After the course I visited Jenn in hospital. She seemed happier, but being doped up on morphine and a nicotine patch may have helped. Seems it was a virus that knocked her down, and she may be going to rehab as an out patient to exercise her limbs. I told her about Bobby and she seemed optimistic that she'd be returning to her flat.

Did a little shopping for colour coded anti-bacteriological chopping boards on the way home, and bought chips, fish and burgers for Kevin (who had the same symptoms) and myself.

Long day.

Today (yesterday?) was Day 3 of the course.

We learnt about industry awards, collective bargaining, legislation and stuff like that. It started late because the trainer had an "overdose of garlic" the previous night. Huh?! We lost one person who couldn't cope, and the rest of the group left a little early (just as well, as I was able to visit Jenn in hospital).

Yesterday when I asked the trainer about lunch, she recommended the egg & bacon roll from the deli down the road. When I told her that I'd had the runs when I got home last night, all she said was "That's be the deli - they don't use gloves in their food handling". Now she tells me!

I'm supposed to be up at 6am this morning. That'll be fun - off to bed now.

Day 2

It was day 2 of my housekeeping training today (day 1 was yesterday, and I missed it because I didn't know I was "in" until the afternoon). We did Occupational Health & Safety today.

I knew more or less most of this stuff from when I did my library course, but it was more interestingly presented, and more relevant to the subject (housekeeping). In the afternoon we played a flash game called Virtual Office (see image below) and I found a new one called Hidden Hazards.

Virtual Office - is Dilbert lurking somewhere in the background?

There was also a video about OH&S as well, but I was gob-smacked by sequences that showed chicken sorting in a hatchery.

On the way home I spent just over $100 on new clothes, bras, and socks. There's six days of practical and I need to wear black and have my hair tied back. I look on the purchases as an investment, but it's embarrassing to buy size 26 tops and 24 pants, and only 20B bras.

A face wax and a a shampoo's in order tonight as well. I'm going to have to "lift my game" as far as personal appearance goes. Being depressed a lot just seems to make things slip in that way.
