I've been regularly getting emails from people using Grouply and it's starting to annoy me.

The homepage for Grouply says that it "consolidates all of the email messages and information from your online groups in one place. Automatically. You can choose to receive all your group updates via a single daily email message or you can access it via the Grouply website." What the fuck is the point of that?! I prefer to use an e-mail client that sits on my PC at home. I do not like to go to be-all sites that seem to be portals for other stuff.

But the real problem here is that it seems to be a sneaky form of identity theft and spam. The sign up page asks you for your Yahoo ID and Password. Huh?! as a page in the SNOPES Forums put it: There is no guarantee that this information that Grouply is aggregating is secure, thus leaving your sign-in info available to spammers and hackers--including all of our list files and photos. There's a Yahoo Answers Page about this called What is "grouply" and is it identity theft? and is well worth reading.

In future I'm just going to send a "boilerplate" reply to Grouply requests saying "PLEASE DON'T SPAM ME" and add their address to my spam filters.

I've had a email account at the Octapod for maybe seven years. Seems they're winding up that service, and any e-mail lists and websites that they host for support reasons, so my Octapod e-mail address will be gone after the start of August. Actually, that's not bad, considering it costs me $2 originally.

However, this is also indicative of the changes at the Octapod, which has gone from a mostly volunteer arts group to a now funds and grants body. Kevin used to be involved there as a techie, but got very disenchanted with it.

Times change. I've been phasing out my Hunter Apana stuff in the last 12 months (even though I was coordinator of it for a year), including references to the e-mail address I had there. Right now, I get more spam from each address than legitimate mail.

Might have to use my Yahoo e-mail address now for online registrations. Pity, because the Octapod one is so easy to remember.

After I discovered (by accident) that there was a Windows version of Evolution (which normally runs under Linux), I installed a copy and tried it out.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that it had two features that Thunderbird lacks, and that I sorely missed since migrating from The Bat!:

  • Categories
You can clump contacts together by one or more categories; and
  • Outgoing Filters
You can do things to not just incoming messages, but outgoing ones as well!

Thunderbird is only as good as the extensions one adds to it, and I have found it extremely annoying that the address book is pretty basic, and that I can't sort my outgoing e-m,ails where I want automatically. Mind you, that said, I probably wont swap over to Evolution, because unlike Thunderbird, there's no or little documentation and/or support.

I'd be very happy if someone created add-ons for the above. The only other thing I really miss from The Bat! is proper templates with "macros" (where one can substitute variables and text) that you could use in filters and so on.

But, Thunderbird plods on. I just don't understand what the problem is.

OK, if you're a "techie" and used to being on mailing lists (or especially, in running them) I'd like you opinion about the following two practices, which I've experienced on one of the few e-mail lists I'm no on NO-MAIL:

  • The list doesn't have any default REPLY-TO field. This means that the default reply is to the original poster rather than to the list.
  • Minutes of meetings are posted on the list, but most people just attach a word document of this, rather than including the text in the body of the message.

Can anyone else see problems with these two practices?

I'm starting to anticipate what the day's frustrations might be.

I'm still in the process of reinstalling stuff on my PC. I was trying to get Thunderbird (my e-mail) client to work, but it seemed to hang downloading mail on my hunter.apana account on the first message. Didn't know why, until I got to uni - someone had sent me a 4 mb + message! Don't have broadband, only a 56k dial-up. A month ago some tried to send a 8 mb message to me - and that was an advert for a cinema festival. Don't these folk know to send smaller copies of photos?!!!!!!

One plus point is that I got my student loan approved, and it will be available next Wednesday so that I can pay the insurance on my car. I don't want a repeat of last time, where I had an accident while out of rego on the way to pay this. Mind you, I haven't had a rego check done yet, but with money upfront for the insurance, I'm hoping that this won't involve too many repairs.

Just love November and December - they drive me crazy and give me the shits.

I'm off to see my endocrinologist this afternoon at 2 - that should be fun.
