Back from the vet's, back from shopping.

The vet found at least one TICK on Mystry, and was worried that he was very dehydrated. and could barely move We don't know how long Mystry was in that spot under the house - it could as long as SIX days. Anyway he gave me the choices and costs. Without treatment Mystry will die. With treatment (which includes admission for 2-3 days and the cost of an anti-tick serum) he has a chance, but that would cost between $50-$650 roughly.

Well, two things. First, right now I can afford this. Second, this is the anniversary of Pegasus's death and I'll be damned if I do nothing to save the poor puss! So he's in the vets for the weekend, and I'm to phone late tomorrow to see how he's doing.

Because I was already out, I went to Glendale and did some shopping. I had dinner at Raj's Corner, bought a big cooler on wheels (in case I need to defrost the fridge again) and then bought pet and human food to put in it , to take home. Odd thing happened at the bus stop - someone had left an old skateboard there, and I used it to help me get the cooler and food home.

An odd day today.

These were each $25 each. K-Mart and Coles had "no name" electric kettles for $8-9, but the switches and tops looked extremely flimsy. The electric kettle I bought has a measuring window on BOTH sides of it (and in number of cups), whereas the cheaper ones had a window behind the handle - a pointless place to put it!

image

Yes, that's my reflection in the shiny new kettle.

The basic kettle was marked down from $40 (Target) which was a ridiculous price for a stove top kettle. This didn't stop two other places at Glendale (NSW, not California) wanting to charge that anyway. I almost got a pink one from Robin's kitchen but this will do fine. It'll be a backup for when the electric kettle blows, and when (not if) we get the annual power blackouts here I can boil up some tea on a camping gas cooker.

And how's this for timing?

While I was down at Stockland's at Glendale it started to poui8r down. I waited 50 minutes at the bus stop for the next bus. When I finally got off at my stop, the rain cut to a very light drizzle until after I got home, and now it''s pouring down again.

I stuffed up in the last shopping because I bought a Rock Melon. I stuffed up because I did so without thinking what I was going to do with it. In the past I've fill a half  of it with Cottage Cheese and pepper and scoop o out with a sppon. Being lactose intolerant now, I probably can't have cottage cheese without a massive dose of the runs (haven't tested that properly yet). Probably also applies to Ricotta Cheese as well. So what to fill this with?

I was in Woolies earlier today in the small goods/cool isle, and found lactose free yoghurt, and cheap tubs of Hummus and Tofu. Will experiment. Not sure about commercial yoghurt. The stuff I've been making at home is OK and so far hasn't had any ill effects. But I look at the ingredients list and of course the first item is MILK SOLIDS. Hmmm.

Was out at Cardiff and Glendale shopping. Had a good lunch at Raj's kitchen, bout an assortment of stuff from everywhere, including replacement screws for the stove top (the previous ones had to be removed with pliers). Anyway I was in Bunnings when I had an acute pain just under my right knee! I knew how Bobs felt later. Next time I do this I must take the big troller and wear shoes instead of thongs (flip-flops for those overseas).

Mind you it was a productive day.

laura_seabrook: (Default)

Went shopping earlier in the week can came home imitations of certain brands (top is what I bought, bottom is what they're imitating). The Coles brand was pretty much like Nutrigrain, but HOOPS wasn't quite like Cheerios - not enough sugar!

laura_seabrook: (cheerful)

I was feeling crook yesterday, today, not so much. I was feelling miserable yesterday, today I had fun. It was a better day.

The one thing I needed to do was go and get a blood and urine test. I could have gone to a number of places but I decided to go to the collection office in Kotara because I'd never been there before.

As it happened, I got off to a silly start. I Caught or tried to catch the 9:05 bus out, but just before it came (late) two over-width vehicles were towed through Northville Drive, at low speeds. That meant that I couldn't meet the connecting 363 bus and because of that the also connecting 224 bus later. We got into Glendale 20 minutes late, and I settled getting a 334 to Kotara instead. Only this one does a very tortuous circuit around thre or for suburbs before it even gets to Kotara. I felt bus sick by the time I got off. Nonetheless, I decides to walk to the collection office but also got off one stop later than I expected. It was a brisk walk and I discover a path around a Catholic School near the railway (and the school hospital called "House Hospital", though I don't think he practices there ) .

Anyway, got to the collection office, gave blood and urine, and was on my way. First stop was at Office Works, looking for labels I could stick around LAN cables for troubleshooting, and metal rings for Bobby's collar (easier to put the clip of the lead through) but found neither. However, I started feeling in a flamboyant mood and bough two giant wing clips (perfect for clipping sheets of paper to drawing boards), a bookmark, a small notebook, a document holder and a big hessian shopping bag to put it (and later loot) in - some of the money on the bag goes to a charity of some sort. Then I made my way around to Westfields.

Then I did something I've never done before - I went into centre management and suggested they move the "please use the ramp" signs from where they are to better locations. There's a driveway for cars up into the car park at the front, and when I wait for the bus nearby I always see people walk across the busy driveway rather than up and down the pedestrian ramp that's right next to it. The signage contributes to that, because on one side the sign is on the fencing mid-way up the ramp (so you don't see it unless you're already on the ramp) and on the other side (which i saw on the way out it's at a baby's eye height where few people noticed it.  Next time I'm there I'll see if my suggestion was taken up (which was to put the signs at eye level on posts nearby).

I went to K-Mart looking for rings and labels and came out with a "Fairyland" metal pencil case - just right for uni days - and two 160 gsm acid free A3 sketch pads (much better than the cartridge paper I normally use). Then, wandering down to the food hall I paused to browse in Borders, and came out with a book on Adobe Flash for less than $40 (I intend to learn flash and animate with it)! Had the usual Indian Curry I like there (only this time with a really HOT Beef Vindaloo which cleared my sinuses)and after a short walk through Woolworths (where I bought 3 x hard to find 750ml containers and a small party mix) I caught the bus to Charlestown.

At Charlestown I was just in time to see a session of Rango. At first I found it alternatively frightening and creepy (see another post) but it was a really fun film as well, and walked out  feeling contented and relaxed. Did a bit of spot shopping, buying rubber bands, another acid free sketch pad, low energy lights, sticky labels, and posting tags from a couple of shops. I ended up with all this:

loot!

Then it was two connecting buses straight home, where I am now. All through today I read another volume of the Sandman series, and finished reading it on the sofa out the back. And you know what? I think I just had an Artist's Date! I feel much better now and refreshed. My right knee still aches a bit and I've been moderately queasy all day (the Vindaloo actually helped settle that) but I feel GOOD.

It was a better day today.

laura_seabrook: (tired)

Only expected to go out yesterday. In fact, I was going to do a library run, and then visit my friend Helen who lives in the next suburb. As it transpired, I did do my library run (latest Thomas Covenant book - yes!) and then double backed to Glendale for some light shopping. The first stop was Bunnings, and was just about to cross the busy access road, when who do I see on the other side, but Helen! As it happens she'd had to go to a medical appointment and had texted me to cancel, but of course I hadn't even looked at my mobile (still sitting in the lounge charging). "It was fate we'd meet" she said.

Maybe it was. I decided to spend some time with her before doing my own shopping. Helen's diabetic and we both needed to eat as it was mid afternoon. We had lunch, she found a good purse for $9, and we chatted. It was fun, and after she caught her bus I did my shopping. It was compact enough because I knew exactly what I needed (the Bunnings items were cheap plumbing brackets which I'm going to use for cables on the walls). It was a good day, and later I spend time in Second Life with a friend building props for webcomics.

Today was a different matter. Hadn't planned to go out, but after an accident popped out the right lense in my spectacles, I needed to go to OPSM at Glendale to have it re-inserted properly. Bugger!

As it happened, I decided to go to Cardiff first and returned some library DVDs, almost immediately catching a bus back to Glendale.  First stop was OPSM where my specs were fixed and I talked to them about re-applying to get a new pair via vision care (didn't qualify last year because of the rent I was getting). Then it was a round of visiting shops to look for specific types of bargains. I found more or less everything I wanted, but it was a longish process and my feet hurt bad by the time I got home. Bumped into Sue, who told me that I was better off not having any boarders. Also, I think I overate. Went to Subway for lunch and got a 12" Chicken and Avocado sub. Nice, but when I got hope I just felt so tired and exhausted. Today had meant to be a clean-up day around the home (starting with the backyard) and instead I fell asleep until after 8pm!

Tomorrow (and probably Monday as well) I will be staying home, regardless.

My first mistake was going out today.

For some reason I wasn't sure if it was a holiday or not. I needed to go out and do a small amount of food shopping. Got ready to go out one the assumption that it was a regular day.  Just as I'm about to race up the street Bella appears sans collar. Both pups were on the chain under the trees, so she must have slipped off. I could try to reattach the collar and chain, but I was already a little late, so I just put her inside down my end.

I raced off to catch the bus and was instead given a lift by someone to Cardiff. Did a little light shopping (went there explicitly to get a dog chain and some coaxial cabling) and then caught a bus back to Glendale Supercentre. Spent a bit of time checking out potential bargains but everything (that I was interested in) was disappointingly much the same as before Xmas. Bought a 30cm box fan in ALDI, and some food in Coles, and waited for the bus - which didn't come.

I waited from 1:03pm until 2:13pm for the bus. A bus came in with "SORRY, NOT IN SERVICE" showing, and then pulled out and changed to my number. A man and his two sons were waiting for a bus and it transpired that this was theirs, but the driver hadn't put the right sign up. When one finally came I complained about the missing bus only to be told that there wasn't one because today's a public holiday with a holiday timetable. D'Oh! Got to Barnsley, traipsed down the street (my feet and right knee are hurting badly) and got home to find that Stripe (with collar) was down my end as well. I can only assume that he whinged too much on the chain by himself.

Am just about to have a cuppa of Peppermint tea and spend most of the rest of the day brain dead. Might just stay home tomorrow  - should have stayed home today.

I have a tradition of not going anywhere in over Easter. When I break that tradition things don't go well and today was no exception.

Struggling I decided to do a little food shopping at Glendale, which I tend to do anyway on a Sunday. However I fell at the first hurdle when I forgot to adjust for the end of daylight saving and turned up at the bus stop an hour early. Rather than walk home and back, I walked up to the next proper bus stop, and waited there. Not a problem though I wa only wearing thongs (silly of me). Anyway I got to Glendale, and ignoring the clues (few cars parked, and a stream of cars circling the shops) got off the bus only to discover that all a newsagent and the cinema were shut for the day.

Seems the centre was shut FRIDAY and SUNDAY but not Saturday and Monday. Sigh - caught a bus to Cardiff (with a very friendly but obviously inexperienced bus driver) to discover that only the hot bread shop was open. Bought some bread and only just caught the local bus going back. I decided that it wasn't worth trying Coles at Edgeworth, but saw signs that the IGA at West Wallsend was open all weekend. However, if I went there, the bus would have turned around and left for the next run while I was shopping, and there would be a long wait for the next one. My foot was starting to feel sore by now so I just got off at the roundabout, went to the chip shop, and went home.

I ought to know better. I was going to go shopping on Friday but went to the NUAC AGM instead. As it is I can get by by defrosting some sausages from the freezer. I have however run out of pet milk and eggs - two ingredients to feed Hallie with while she's nursing pups. Oh well, it's only a couple of days.

Comedy of errors methinks.

Needed to get out today - just to get out of the house.

Saw "The Lovely Bones" which brought me to tears.

Got lost on the buses going to Wesfields and had lunch at John Hunter Hospital instead.

Got to Westfields via Charlestown (roundabout route). Bought shoes and tops at Rivers, hand towels at Sam's Club, a Set Top Box at Good Guys (also also records to / plays from USB storage), and a DVD (The Frighteners) at JB's.

Caught bus to Glendale, bought bread, beer and and iced tea, and browsed Whipper Snippers (Line Cutters) at Bunnings.

Got to Barnsley and bought chips at the shop. Am slightly drunk after a beer. Have had mild diarrhoea all day.

Really did need to go out. Cried a lot today as well.

Got all the grocery shopping down down at Glendale. On weekdays (and Sundays), provided I know what I want, it's possible to catch the bus to Glendale, do all the shopping, and catch the same bus coming back home. In general this gives about 40-50 minutes of shopping, which might not sound like a lot of time, but I find it refreshing to get what I want and then piss off home.  In particular this works well on a Sunday morning where the whole time (including bus travel) is just over 90 minutes.

I still have a lot to do, though it seems like none of what I've done this week is what I was planning to do. What I hope to do today is continue to clean up my place, and back up stuff on my remaining PC. K&M Michelle are still not back. I came home to find a delivery for Kevin sitting on a chair near the front gate. That's the fourth thing delivered while he's been away. Though on the whole I've been enjoying them not being here (PC crashes being a separate issue), it will be good to see them back.

Getting out

MUST LEAVE HOUSE TODAY, MUST GO SHOPPING.
Must not let obsessive actions on PC keep me home.
Gasp - what a massive acting out!

It also helps that I no longer have a massive headache.

Odd uni day

This morning I kept chatting to people on the bus. My original intention was to go to Wallsend library, do a little shopping, get the hell out of dodge and get home before it became to hot and humid to bear (the rains have finally stopped). But, that didn't exactly happen.

I bumped into Helen on the bus who used to go to university when I was doing my Bachelors. Lots of things happened to her in the meantime, though she now lives one suburb away from me. She mentioned that she'd applied to continue her studies via UAC and got an offer from the uni! It just so happened that today was the first advisory day and she was going in to sort it all out. I offered to come in with her and assist where needed.

Now apparently she was going to meet a friend there as well. The friend didn't show and I took her to the Info Commons where she got the correct information about what she should do. Apparently that was to go to the Great hall at 2pm and talk to people. That was a few hours away and she had to meet up with her friend so I said I'd double back to Wallsend, go to the library, do some shopping and come back - which I did (and bought more than I'd anticipated, you can get a 2 person tent for $7.50 in Coles there!).

We were supposed to meet up at the Great hall at 2pm. I got there a few minutes late, and waited until 3:40pm but she didn't show. I don't know what happened but I caught a series of buses home. Did she get back? I have no idea. While I was at the uni I used the HUB to enrol in Semester 1 and 2 for my Masters this year, so for me it was a productive day.

I'm sure I'll find out eventually how it went down.

I popped into Borders yesterday and almost (after an hours browsing of  half a dozen candidates) bought two books on Linux for just under $90. But I didn't. Good sense prevailed and I will read the Linux Bible book have on loan from the library (and pages on the web) for free.

Instead I spent (some of)  that money on Minder and Rio Bravo DVDs, plastic boxes, beer and food. Money well frittered away *GRIN*

laura_seabrook: (Default)

Bugger - I was checking MyHub, which is one of the net based databases at the university (it holds a version of your study details) to check when my mandatory lectures are on. They're on Tuesday (today) between 16:00 (4pm) and 18:00 (6pm). This seems an unusually late time considering that the Honours seminars were between 1:30pm and 2:30pm.

What makes this awkward is that my last bus home from the uni leaves at 6:06pm, which gives me six minutes to get from the lecture to the bus stop. I can probably do that (sometimes the bus leaves early) but this is annoying. Even a mere 30 minutes earlier and there'd by margin for error.

I have an appointment with my new case worker at the employment agency today at 2pm. Originally it was yesterday but she changed it at the last minute. I also need to do some shopping. This means that the sensible thing would be to stay home, go to that appointment, go shopping, take the shopping to the lecture, run for the bus, and come home.

Hmmm. Sometimes it sucks not having my own transport.

laura_seabrook: (Default)

Got my shopping done just in time to watch the film. I enjoyed the Ghost Town, which was a more gentle comedy than I'd expected (though it did take the piss out of series like The Ghost Whisperer), with a "message" to boot. Just as I came out of the cinema the bus home turned up (it was actually early) so I had no waiting. Can't get better than that.

Still hot and sweaty, but not nearly as much as I would have been staying home.

laura_seabrook: (Default)

I decided to see The Spirit anyway, though I must say I have very mixed feelings about it. Did a little shopping and caught the first bus home.

Expect a review soon.

Almost

Almost went out today, about 15 minutes ago.

I was all dressed, with ankle support on, and I got out the gate and was about to walk up the road... ...and then something came over me very strongly, that I should stay home today.

I'll go out if Michelle and Kevin go shopping, as she has a car, but not otherwise.

laura_seabrook: (Default)

...didn't quite go as planned.

The plan, was to catch the 8:47am bus to the university, go to NUSA and pay this year's dues, nd return a library book; then to visit Jenny; go to Westfield's at Kotara and buy a book and do some grocery shopping, and go home.

What happened was that i missed the 8:47am bus by a minute. Rather than go home I walked to the nearest covered bus stop, where I'd wait for the next bus (at 10:10am) and do some reading in the meantime. On the way I twisted my ankle - the same one I twisted earlier in the week! I probably should have gone straight home. Instead I caught the earlier bus which would have taken me to my G.P. at Charlestown. But, when I got to Glendale it didn't feel that bad, so I swapped back to the bus that took me to the university.

Only NUSA wont be open until 23rd February. I returned the book and borrowed some others, and bumped into my Supervisor there - made a commitment to contact him in a couple of weeks when more was open at the uni. Because - the Bar on the Hill was shut, so was the Tanner bar, and an ATM went missing. I was going to get lunch there but there was a large queue so caught a bus to Jenny's nursing home instead.

It was a good visit with Jenny, but my ankle was starting to really hurt. I was there for a couple of hours and then caught the bus to Westfields. I had a late lunch there and didn't do any grocery shopping. I did buy a book at borders but not the one I'd expected (well, it was $50 cheaper). I caught the bus back to Glendale, did a small amount of grocery shopping and caught the bus home (and got there after qwe had to change buses as the one I was on was about to break down) . Got chips on the way and more or less collapsed out the back after feeding the pets.

Spent about 3 hours out the back, just lying on cushions watching SBS on the TV in the garden shed, with Bobby and Hallie next to me. It was all rather pleasant sitting in the dark with the stars above and nice breeze, after a hot and sweaty (not to mention painful) day of running about. But, I forgot to buy milk and beer (this was definitely a "beer day") and a couple of other things.

I did buy an ankle support however, and injury permitting will do a small amount of shopping at Edgeworth tomorrow morning. Today was a long day. Hopefully tomorrow will be less so.

In a whirl

On Thursday I rearranged the lounge room.

Fair enough, I like doing this at least once every six months, and it usually takes a few days before it settles down to status quo. Only I was still sick, and dead tired by night time. Yesterday I made the mistake of going out.

What I've been interested in was a couple of speakers for my PC, as it's no longer next to the stereo and I don't feed the sound there any more. There were a few options at Glendale but I was too stuffed to decide. I got off the bus and immediately felt dizzy and exhausted, had a sinus headache, and dark cold pains in my chest. I could barely follow anything and when I went in to Subway for lunch could barely read their menus on the wall (mind you they have swapped to spot lighting and grey backgrounds on them). I staggered around the centre for a while. Some things were good, like finding a cheap copy of Hedwig in Target, but otherwise it was a struggle to be conscious. I went home without buying any speakers.

I also slept for about 12 hours and today, though I still feel off it was a much nicer day, and although I started out just going to the library, I ended up going to Jesmond, The Store, and Westfields! I ended up buying a very very cheap 5.1 system ($25), but not for me, for Kevin! When I got home I broke out the set of tiny metal speakers I bought from the Reject Shop a few months ago. The sound is tinny, but they are loud! Better I use those until I find what I want.

The other thing I was browsing for was a small table lamp. It seems that there's a "Mediterranean model" about the size of a small rubbish bin for between $9-10. After the migraine I had last week, I want to have a spare non-incandescent light handy. No rush though. I like the little lamp, but the base is too light.

Stayin' home tomorrow.
