I did a "library run" yesterday where I returned a good twenty items I had out from two local library systems. The previous day (Sunday) I never got out from home because I got distracted by the pups - they'd started to jump the front gate and follow me up the road - and missed the buses I needed to catch to get to the Rainbow Visions Picnic. I was going to go shopping on the way back from that, so I really needed to go out Monday.

Didn't get out until just before noon, and caught the bus to Charlestown to return stuff there. The next stop was going to be Wallsend to go to the library, and do a small amount of shopping. Only they'd changed the bus routes and stops at Charlestown. The bus stop I normally went to in order to catch the 100 was now "only for school buses"  and when I went back to the (new) stop I'd got off on the way in, someone directed me to a stop on Pacific Hwy. Seemed reasonable, because I'd also caught 100s there before.

Only - it was entirely the wrong bus stop!

I waited for 50 minutes, spending the time reading a comic discard I'd bought from the library for 50c (A DC story called "The Nail") when the woman sitting next to me started chatting about things. She pointed to a sign right behind me which said that only two buses stopped there now, and made a comment that maybe "she been sent to tell me that". Found the correct bus stop - which was directly opposite the one I'd arrived at - and continued on for the rest of the day's business without further complications.

But you know what - I think she was!

Perth Trip

laura_seabrook: (smile)

I will be travelling to Perth at the end of November, leaving on the 30th and returning on the 6th December. I will be able to catch my brother's and mother's birthdays on the 1st and 3rd respectively. Felt a deep need to see mum before next June/July, when Queer Collaborations is on in Perth. A little voice in me is say she may not be there then. I' may be wrong about that (been wrong before) but what if I put it off and I'm not. Besides, it's a good time to visit Perth - still not too hot and dry to comfortableness.

I'll be travelling via Virgin Air, but this time I'll be prepared!!!!

I'm out of here in 10 minutes, on my way to Melbourne. Today has been chaotic. I oughta be more organised, but this will do for now.
laura_seabrook: (Default)

I spoke to Kevin last night and he suggested flying down and/or flying back from Sydney to Melbourne. This was an initially appealing idea, because you can get cheap airfares at Virgin, Jetstar and Tiger at the moment. Of course the dates you can get them for are restricted, so I thought right - travel down by train, come back by plane (it was relative easy to get a flight back on the 24th from any of them. But they all require Master/credit cards to work, except for Virgin which also has something called Poli which is some form of Internet banking.

I got as far as working out the details for a flight back using Virgin and tried Poli, but it bombed out because "my PC clock wasn't in sync"!!!  Frustrating. I can get Kevin to book and pay for this later today, though I think I'll just come back by the train. It's about an 11 hour trip either way (sitting up) instead of an hour's by plane. The big difference is the luggage you can take with you, and the price.

  • One way from Melbourne to Sydney by train for me is $33, and for luggage I can check in two items, each weighing between 5kg and 20kg and not more than 70 x 60 x 50cm (length x height x width).
  • One way from Melbourne  to Sydney by plane for me (via Virgin) is $48 for the seat plus an extra $20.95 for luggage + insurance for a total of $68.95, and my luggage is restricted to a "$10 fee per sector for up to 23kg allowance".

I think I'll just take the train both ways - the total is still only going to be less than the airfare one way!

I was speaking to K and we wanted to know if it was OK for him and M to go away over Easter. This is, say two weeks away and after the pups have been born (due any day) and Hallie's in the middle of weaning them (if that's the right word). I said yes, providing that I go away first.

It occurs to me that I said last year that I'd visit Bathurst this year. It'd be a days trip there and back. I'd leave Friday, and travel back Monday. That'd be two days in Bathurst.I'll have to check with Jessica and see if I could stay there, unless I might stay elsewhere.

Also, as Querelle is being done this year by a Bathurst contingent, this would be a good chance for me to get cracking on that WANKERS & WOWSERS strip.

First, I borrowed from the libraries: the first season of Samurai 7, 1st volume of Azumanga Daioh, Ninja Scroll and Planet Terror. Got plenty to watch for a bit.Actually they had volumes 1 to six of Azumanga Daioh but I think I'll sample the first one before borrowing the rest. It looks c-r-a-z-y!

Kali looking pleasantly madThe second nice thing is that Kali and James phoned me from Tuntable Falls (near Nimbin). Together with Rainier they run Flowtrack up there (both being really good engineers). James is also one of the organisers of the Australian World Naked Bike Ride (you can see him riding in this work unsafe photo along with the rest of the photos). I used to visit them regularly before 2002. James said they were "worried about me", and I have to admit, I've been worried about myself. That being the case, I got an invite to come up in May for the MardiGrass (not to be confused with the Mardi Gras in Sydney).

Normally I have an extremely low tolerance (allergic?) for the weed - it gives me the shakes, a headache, and I pass out. But I like the idea of this. I've been to Nimbin festivals before and they are LOTS OF FUN!

And I think that's what I need just now.

To make things complete, I lost my mobile phone last night.

However, this morning I had a phone call to say that it'd been found at Woollies in Strathfield. That being the case, I caught the train / bus / train down, picked it up, went to a newsagents, bought some lunch, and caught the next train (which left a minute of my getting on the platform) back to Cardiff. It got there with 40 minutes to spare before the last us home, so I did some shopping at ALDI's (and a newsagent's) while I waited.

Nice to be home. While I was at Strathfield I bought two Linux magazines, one had DVD distros of Ubuntu, and the other SUSE. Lots more stuff on these than there is on the CDs.

I think maybe  long boring periods of travel (where the only things I did were look out the window and listen to my MP3 player) might have been good for me.

...I feel like I've been melting in the heat.

Out of those five days I've been out and about for four of them. Twice I've been down to Sydney and on those trips suffered from dehydration and diarrhoea at the most awkward of times.

Monday I visited Jenny at the nursing home and afterwards it was all I could do to stay awake. I had that all night, feeling sleepy and dizzy.

Tuesday I went down to Newtown (and was constantly dizzy and sleepy on the train) to pick up artwork from the 24 Hour Comic Day event and pass on a comic I'd borrowed. Anyway I won a $50 voucher at Arial's. They had two shops - one at The Rocks and another at Paddington. I went to the latter one and didn't get home until after 8pm. I mean, it was sort of a nice day out, but I also felt a bit like Arthur Stace, tramping around town in the wrong shoes but with not enough energy to write anything in chalk. Cramps and diarrhoea were endemic in the heat involving long sessions in the toilet on the train, and a stop-over at Edgeworth between buses home (where I drank a 2 litre container of orange juice).

Wednesday I stayed home until [livejournal.com profile] chaosmanor (Elaine) turned up for a visit. She was touring the East Coast on a research project for one of her books. We went to Warner's Bay for some Thai food. It was good to chat with her again. On the Thursday I went with Elaine down the freeway to Sydney, acting as her navigator while she returned the Wicked hire van she'd been renting.

09-01-22 Elaine

That part of the trip was fun. Later I trudged off to the rocks to check out the other Arial store but they still didn't have anything i wanted to blow the $50 voucher on. It might have been a mistake to walk all the way down George St to the Rocks. I had to stop numerous times for toilet breaks, despite hovering around in air conditioned comfort inside Dymocks.

For a while I just hovered around at the Museum of Contemporary Art. where they had an interesting exhibition of Yinka Shonibare's stuff. I just loved the fibre-art adaptation of Enlightenment themes in his work. But somehow when I came out it was an hour later than I thought, and I missed the last train-bus connection back home. Rather than panic, I went to Bondi Junction and had dinner there and browse at Borders (also air conditioned). Almosty saw a film but caught the train to Cardiff instead. As it was I didn't get there until 10:30pm and got a taxi home.

Yesterday was blah. Despite efforts all week (well ok, Wednesday and Friday) I've made extremely little progress on my web comics. Every time I get some enthusiasm I sweat all over the artwork. Bleaugh. the highlight of yesterday was doing some washing up at 11pm, while it was cool.

Today, I'm still hot and fucking sweaty and though I still want to do those web comics, so far all I've done is round two of the washing up. Bleagh. I am sick of this weather.

I got back from my trip to Manly. The full story tomorrow, but...

...my train got in at Cardiff at 10:50pm, and I got home, after walking 8.8. km at 12:49am (couldn't get a taxi). The Google map listing of this route estimated it would take about 1 hour 48 minutes, which was about right.

However, I wasn't wearing my hiking shoes, and my feet feel like I've been walking days, not hours. Time for bed, maybe.

I must find a better way of getting home at night, like another scooter or something.

It was a very good trip but am glad to be home.

In Perth

Probably won't be posting much while I'm here in Perth, because this trip I won't be near the internet much. Here's a round-up of how things went.

Monday

Didn't get down to Karl's until almost 10pm. I was delayed until late in the day by a bank stuff-up (my balance went from $40 to -$20 to $20 again). Went straight to sleep almost as soon as I got there.

Tuesday

Karl's an early riser which is good - got to the Domestic Airport by 8:05am. The flight wasn't due board until 8:45am so I had a bit of time on my hands. What I should have done was go shopping before I got to the airport. After the trainfare (only $10 for me) I had $10 on me and should have got a drink and some snacks. As it was, I was stuck on a five hour flight on Virgin Blue, where you have to pay for all the drinks and snacks, and $9.90 if you want to watch the entertainment after the first five minutes.  It was a l-o-n-g flight, even with the magazines I read.

The plane got in 15 minutes late and Mum and Thelma Gunnell met me at reception. Got the baggage, got the shuttle bus back to Thelma's car (which was parked for some reason in the long term car park) and got out. We went to Centrepoint at Midland before going to Mum's. I met Doug Mile's wife at the friut shop there. Can't remember her name, but I worked with Doug for a number of years at Midland Sociala Security. She said he still works in Centrelink (which is what the C.E.S. and Socicial Security became a while ago). We had a very late lunch at 2pm, which by Newcastle time was 4pm. I had only eaten some cereal, an apple and an orange, and some hot chocklate on the plane all day, so I was absolutely famished.

That night I slept from 7pm until about 3am (when I went to the toilet), and then until 7am. Getting to the toilet at night at my mum's is an involved process. My mum's security conscious (there's only her there now) and she has an outside toilet. To get to it I have to unlock four doors, including the bolt on the outhouse!

Wednesday

Yesterday my brother Mark to myself, mum, and his daughter Sophie to a resturant for my mother's birthday. It was really nice although Sophie was rather low. Her dog Minty died in its sleep next to her recently, and she had him longer than I had Pegasus. Mark, Dee (his wife) and Sophie are going on a trip to the Blue Mountains and Sydney today (Thursday) but they have to put Mango the cat down - not because of the trip, but because she has a sever liver problem and is in constant pain. In any case, coming so soon after Minty's death, this is rather upsetting. Golly, I know what she feels like. It seems I'll be back before their holiday's over, so I might be able to hook up with them for a day, maybe when they're visiting manley and Taronga Park Zoo. That will be really good I think.

Didn't do much else yeaterday, other than watch some TV, take photos in and around the house, and catch up on episodes of ANDROMEDA. I talked a lot with mum, who it seems still talks to Snoopy, even though he died in 1983, and sees ghosts of my aunty and dad (maybe), Perhaps it's not so unlikely that I still talk to the Poogle back home. Ronnice also told me the story of how, when I was still a baby and had Spinal Meningitus, that she saw an angel in the waiting room. And my brother Mark sees ghosts in his house (including a ghost cat). Hmmm, I'm starting to think that I'm normal for my family. :)

Thursday (today)

I made a point of having breakfast at Miss Maud's in thecity. It's all Swedish all-you-can eat stuff. I made a pig of myself and it was wonderful. If I still have an appetite later I might go to Mr Samurai for lunch. Don't think I'm only here for food - I'm not - but these are maybe the only two food outlets I miss from Perth (mmm, and maybe the most amazing Indian curry take-away in Mt. Lawley). Might not get too many opportunities to go to them in the future.

Right now I'm in an Internet cafe that seems to be located in the stripped and gutted premises of what used to be Strombecker's which I used to play video games and pinball in the 70s and 80s. I think it's actually the same place I went to on the last two trips, only they moved from the upstairs location. Nice to have a bit of continuity. :)

I plan to spend most of the day in the city centre, doing a bit of window shopping and locating things. Stephen Dedman has a bookshop somewhere here (SHAFTO LANE!) and I'll see if I can say hello.  I have a tradition (it used to be buying a book at Dorrington's which no longer exists) of buying a CD at 78's when I come to Perth, and Fantastic Planet should be right round the corner. Tomorrow night I'm having dinner with Ray and Alethea Raspa, whom I've known for over twenty years (we were all Trekkers together) and my uncle Allen (who introduced me to musicals) should be coming to lunch at Mum's on Monday.

This is a really good trip.

I plan to go to John Hunter to have my EEG test. Then I'll come back home, and sometime later (after lunch?) Michelle will drive me to the station. I'll then et down to Sydney and crash at [livejournal.com profile] zelieq's. On Tuesday I'll catch a 9am flight to Perth.

You probably won't be seeing too many posts until I get there.

08-11-10 Macarthur ParkI wandered about Sydney via the trains on Monday. I decided to go to Macarthur, which is the end of the line on one of Sydney's rail lines. Strange place - one side looked like someone's idea from Second Life of what a park should be - 08-11-10 Macarthur Shoppingall hills and isolated trees (I fully expected there to be an ultra modern cemetery on the other side, but it was only a TAFE) and other side a relatively new Westfield's shopping centre. I had a late lunch there and decided to see a film  - Death Race. This is a remake of Death Race 2000 and was exactly what I needed - mindless and pointless ultra-violent entertainment.

After that I caught a series of train around in a great circle, from Macarthur to Glenfield to Wolli Creek to Redfern to Newtown. I was not in a terribly good mood when I got there. I wanted to eat at Tamara's North Indian Curry place but after I found an ATM I couldn't find it! I was rude to some beggars, posted an entry on LJ, and finally I caught the train to Liverpool and then a bus to Casula, where I turned up at 10pm on Jayne's doorstep.

Goddess I needed to go to Jayne's. All I said was "Peggy's gone" at the front door and she knew why I was there. In the last three years she'd lost three pets, including one I helped bury. She understood, and I could talk to her.

I slept on the sofa.

The 18th

OK - I finally got through to the Octapod earlier today. Due to stuff ups and lateness, there's no point in going ahead with the event there. However I will monitor things for next year and maybe the Octapod can run one then.

So it goes.

However, I am still keen to participate in one of these because the bloody thing's on my birthday (and also, I enjoy 24 hour comic events)! I'm sent an e-mail off to the folk organising the one in Sydney.  It's at Twenty10 in Newtown, which is a support venue for GLBT youth. The e-mail I got last weeks said that "the venue has cooking, sleeping and bathroom facilities" - you bewdy!!!

The event starts at 11am on the 18th. Ideally I'd want to get down there tomorrow, staying at a friend's place overnight, and go there first thing in the morning. Otherwise I can just get there about 11:30am if I leave early enough (leaving here at 7am).

So, any of my Sydney LJ friends want to put me up for a night?

laura_seabrook: (Default)

I'm not going to go home for Xmas.

Instead, I'll leave on the 2nd of the December, and be home for mum's birthday on the 3rd. I would have left last day of November in time for my brother's birthday on the 1st, but I have an E.E.G. test that day. I should be able to stay for a week at least.

This solves a lot of hassles, and I hope to see some old friends on this trip, like [livejournal.com profile] stephen_dedman and [livejournal.com profile] curi_oz_wolf.

There were some minor difficulties getting back to Barnsley after the adventure in St. Clair. Thousands or pilgrims are in Sydney for the World Youth Day (which mysteriously takes a week to happen) and it affected public transport.

The train back to Newcastle stood at Strathfield for half an hour while several trains used its rail line going the other way (and other trains curiously stood just off from the station). As it was so late, the express for once didn't stop at Cardiff, and I was forced to alight at Fassifern and wait for the next regular train.

As I was on the platform there seemed to be a party of pilgrim there (a number had very prominent crucifixes). There was a whole slew of announcements about "staying behind the yellow line" and so forth. The last one said "passengers wishing to travel to Cardiff should travel in the rear four cars". This is sound advice on an eight car train and I automatically moved to the centre of the station. So did the pilgrims. hen the next train came, it was a two carriage "rattler" from Morisset. The pilgrims were surprised at how small it was, and it just seemed to funny to me.

It was another hour before I got home, and Pegasus was all over me with licks and jumps. I slept well last night (with the weirdest dreams). It just so nice to sleep in your own bed!

laura_seabrook: (Default)

Well I'm up, and about to have breakfast.

Put my trip to Broadmeadow before 9am into the Transport Infoline trip gadget, and it came up with these. Somehow I don't think I'll take the one that arrives exactly at 9am - tempts fate too much!

laura_seabrook: (cheerful)

I took my scooter out for an excursion yesterday, via the route shown below:

BikeTrip_2007-08-25

I wanted to do three things on the trip:

  1. explore the range of the bike;
  2. scout out Teralba as a potential terminus for trips to Sydney and into Town; and
  3. have some fun!

Theoretically the scooter has a range of 80km, but there are lots of variables in play, including exhausted batteries, the weight carried and the terrain travelled. I have two batteries on it, and used the first up until returning via Teralba, and then swapped over. According to Google Maps the route from Barnsley to Warner's Bay is about 13.7 km (I had to adjust this though, because the default would take you via private roads where giant coal trucks run). Adding an extra 2.5 km for the detour to the Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery, that gives a round trip of about 30 km. Not bad for a test. I might be able to visit Jenny's and come back without recharging.

One of the things I was hoping was to use the scooter to get to a railway station in order to catch trains to Sydney, and to get home when I come back. The bus service here is such that on a weekend that last one out is at 4pm. That means that if I want to go to a club down in Sydney, I have to leave real early, and can't get back from the station coming home without waiting for a mid day bus. That's one big reason why I stopped going to clubs and other events in Sydney. The exceptions were when I was staying with friends, and travelled back the day after (or even the day after that). When I had the car, it wasn't an issue, but no car = great difficulty.

Can't say that I was impressed with the facilities at Teralba, but the do have a caravan park there - perhaps I could rent a spot for the night. I mentioned this idea to Kevin and he said I could probably even get power there, and recharge the bike while I was away! The other location is Cockle Creek Station, which has a platform you can walk on (rather than stairs to a central platform - makes a difference lugging a 70 kg bike) on either side, so I could take my bike with me. That has issues too, but it's a possibility. I can just see myself riding around Sydney on my yellow scooter.

And did I have fun? Yes. Had a waffle at Warner's Bay, did some shopping at the Coles there, and got home safely.

laura_seabrook: (Default)
Had a day of rest yesterday - watched a lot of cable TV and a film called DOGMA. Feel heaps better (but will see a Doctor when I get home). I fly out of here at 14:14 local time at Albany International Airport, and after over 24 hours of flying (and because of the international dateline), return home at 7:50 on the same day!

If anyone in Sydney wants to meet me there, feel free to do so. My flight # is UNITED 863.

It's been a great visit, evene with the collapse. See folk soon.
